"I want to sign you to my record label."

The words struck Laurie in the chest. Like somone had punched her in the chest. The man sitting across from her was the head producer of Colombia Records. And they offered to sign her. She was elated.

Her new manager, Martin, immediately got her working.

"You need songs, my angel. Songs!"

Martin was a Spanish man in his late 40s. Laurie enjoyed his company immediately.

When she got home, she immediately conjured up multiple songs. She stayed up all night, a lit cigarette in her hand with candles being her only source of light as her record player played the same side of "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd played over and over again.

There were times where she was so engrossed in her own writing, her cigarette would hang in her mouth, and the ash would just fall onto her paper. She'd blink, swiping the ash off and letting the cycle repeat itself until the cigarette was nothing but a stub.

She came up with a list of 11 songs. A variety of pop and rock.

1. Picture you
2. My Kink is Karma
3. Paper bag
4. Just a girl
5. Silver Springs
6. Criminal
7. Casual
8. Barracuda
9. You Oughta Know
10. Rhiannon
11. Gypsy

Her album was self titled, simply being called "Laurie Castel." Her idea for an album cover sparked from seeing Martin come into the studio with a red lipstick mark on the collar of his white shirt. The rest of the red barely blended into his olive skin, but it was noticeable once he was under the studio lights.

Laurie got a plain white canvas, and rummaged her vanity for all of her lipsticks. Even the ones she didn't reach for on a normal occasion she used.

She puckered her lips, and left the traces of her kiss on stark white canvas. Velvety red found its way, the creases and crinkles of her lips defined.

She had light pinks, hot pinks, dark pink, dark red, light red, and even light oranges and terracotta colors. Regardless, the pinks and reds triumphed.

Laurie pulled away from her masterpiece, her lips stained from all the different colors. Lipstick had made its way onto her teeth.

She smiled as she flipped it around to show Martin.

"It's like the Mona Lisa! Very good, angel!"

On June 20th, 1989 "Laurie Castle: The Beginning." debuted. Almost instantaneously, Laurie was catapulted into the life of famous people. The glitz, the glamour.

All of her songs were hits, but notoriously her band was the type of band that was banned from households all over the nation due to her "crude" and "lude" language. For example, her songs "You Oughta Know", "Casual," and "My Kink is Karma." All three being dubbed 'revenge' songs. And honorable mention, "Silver Springs."
