9- Sneaking out at night!
The clock ticked quietly, the rhythmic sound blending with the deep breaths of the sleeping tour crew. It was just past midnight, and the dim light from the moon barely filtered through the curtains of the hotel room. Matilda had been tossing and turning for hours, her restlessness getting the best of her.
Across the room, Niall shifted on the couch, flicking through his phone under the covers. Matilda glanced over, the faint glow of his screen lighting up his face. A mischievous idea popped into her head. She sat up slowly, careful not to make any noise. “Psst, Niall!” she whispered, getting his attention.
Niall peeked over his blanket, his blue eyes wide with curiosity. “What?” he mouthed, glancing toward the door where Paul, their tour manager, was passed out in the next room.
“Let’s sneak out,” Matilda grinned, her brown eyes glinting with excitement. “I need to get out of here for a bit. There’s that café down the road – it’s open 24/7. Come on, I know you’re hungry.”
Niall’s face brightened instantly. “You’re dangerous, you know that?” he whispered back, but he was already throwing off his blanket and quietly pulling on his shoes. “But alright, I’m in. Let’s get out of here before Paul wakes up.”
Matilda giggled, throwing on her hoodie and tiptoeing toward the door. She cracked it open, making sure it didn’t squeak. They were halfway down the hallway when they both froze at the sound of footsteps behind them.
“Where d’you two think you’re going, eh?”
Matilda’s heart nearly leapt out of her chest. She turned around slowly, only to see Louis standing there, his arms crossed, eyebrow raised. Behind him were Harry, Zayn, and Liam, all wearing matching looks of curiosity and amusement. Louis’ expression softened immediately when his eyes landed on Matilda.
“At midnight?” Louis tilted his head, clearly not buying it. “And dressed like you’re off to rob a bank? What’re ya playing at, love?” he directed at Matilda.
Matilda shrugged sheepishly, trying to suppress a laugh. “I just needed to get out for a bit. It’s too quiet. We were going to grab something at the café down the street. You know, just a quick snack.”
Harry smirked, pushing his curls away from his face. “And you thought you’d sneak out without us? Bold move, Matty.”
Zayn nodded, leaning casually against the wall. “Sounds like you two were planning to leave us behind. I don’t appreciate that.”
Matilda flushed, but Niall quickly jumped in. “We weren’t ditching you, mate! It’s just… well, we didn’t want to get caught.”
Louis sighed dramatically, shaking his head. “Caught, huh? And you thought we wouldn’t notice? You’re worse than I thought, Niall.”Then his stern act cracked as he let out a small chuckle. “Alright, well, if you’re going to sneak out, you’re doing it all wrong anyway."
Matilda blinked, surprised. “Wait… you’re not mad?”
Liam grinned, his arms crossed. “We should be, but let’s be honest – sneaking out does sound kind of fun.”
Louis leaned down, placing a gentle hand on Matilda’s shoulder. “I should scold you, love, but I get it. Let’s just do it properly, yeah? No need to get Paul in a fit.”
Matilda and Niall exchanged looks, their faces breaking into smiles. They had expected a lecture, not this. “So… you’re all coming with us?” Matilda asked, her voice filled with a mix of excitement and disbelief.
“Course we are,” Louis said, already pulling his hoodie over his messy hair. “Can’t let you run off without me to keep an eye on ya."
Harry and Zayn exchanged knowing smirks. “Let’s do it then,” Zayn said, adjusting his beanie. “But we gotta make sure no one sees us. You know how security can get.”
Liam, always the sensible one, checked his phone. “There’s a back door near the staff entrance. If we go that way, we can avoid the main lobby cameras.”
“Good thinking, Liam,” Niall nodded, impressed. “You’re a right genius.”
The group gathered their things quickly, throwing on hoodies and hats in an attempt to be as discreet as possible. Matilda could hardly contain her laughter, seeing Louis try to adjust his beanie over his messy hair. He caught her staring and gave her a playful nudge. “Oi, don’t you laugh at me, love. I’m doing this for you.”
Once they were ready, they crept down the stairs and slipped out the staff door Liam had mentioned, successfully avoiding any security. The cool night air hit them as they stepped outside, and Matilda couldn’t help but smile, the feeling of freedom washing over her.
Niall led the way, his stomach clearly dictating the pace. “I can almost taste the pastries already,” he muttered, making the others laugh.
The café wasn’t far, just a few blocks away, and the streets were empty at this hour, which was a rare luxury for them. When they finally reached the small café, its warm lights spilling out onto the street.
They slid into a booth near the back, keeping their heads low just in case anyone recognized them. The waitress approached with a tired smile, clearly not expecting a group like this.
“What can I get you lot?”
Louis spoke . “We’ll have a bunch of whatever’s fresh, love. And some tea. Lots of tea.”
Matilda couldn’t help but giggle again. She leaned back, watching as Niall and Zayn argued over what pastry to get, Harry chiming in with his usual cheeky remarks.
Louis caught her gaze and smiled softly. “You alright, love?” he asked quietly, his tone full of genuine care.
Matilda nodded, feeling safe and happy in the moment. “Yeah, Lou. I’m good.”
“Good.” He reached over and ruffled her hair gently, a protective gesture he always did. “You’re a troublemaker, you know that? But I wouldn’t change a thing about ya.”
