I could feel Carter's intense gaze lingering on me, which only made my anxiety deepen. I fiddled nervously with the hem of my dress, trying to blend into the background. Just as I thought he might approach, the headmistress called for me, giving me the perfect excuse to escape.
"Excuse me," I whispered, hurriedly slipping past him, shoulders hunched, my heart pounding in my chest.
As I walked away, I could feel his eyes on my back. The headmistress's voice followed me, a mixture of expectation and warning. "Clair, dear, I see you've met Carter. He's one of our most... distinguished students." The way she said it made me uneasy.
"Let me remind you," she continued, her tone sharp, "you are the first half-blood to attend this institution. You only get one chance. Stay clear of Carter Prince; his family has the means to ruin you."
"I understand," I replied, trying to hide the tremor in my voice. As I left the feast, her words echoed in my mind, wrapping around me like a heavy cloak.
