As midnight approached, I wrestled with the decision to go. Caution urged me to stay in my room, to focus on my studies and avoid potential trouble. But curiosity gnawed at me, an itch I couldn't quite scratch.
Just as I tried to settle down, a faint knock on my window pulled me from my thoughts. Hesitant, I opened it, only to find a tiny owl perched on the sill, holding a rolled-up parchment in its beak.
It dropped the note at my feet before flying off into the night. My heart raced as I unrolled it and read the hasty handwriting: "Meet me in the abandoned greenhouse at midnight. Come alone. -C."
With a sigh, I crumpled the note and tossed it aside. No. I wouldn't let Carter draw me into whatever trouble he had in mind. Instead, I focused on my studies, trying to banish thoughts of him from my mind.
The next day, I noticed Carter watching me from across the courtyard. He leaned casually against a pillar, his eyes fixed intently on me. I felt a shiver run down my spine, but I refused to react. I was determined to stand my ground.
