Jonah led them deeper into the cave, his steps firm as Skath and Lyra followed. The light dimmed, and the air grew thicker, filling their breaths with an echo of mystery.
"You shouldn't be here," Jonah repeated, stopping abruptly and turning to face them. "There are forces at play that you don't understand. This cave is a place of power."
"What kind of power are you talking about?" Lyra asked, trying to mask her anxiety. "What does all this mean?"
"The carvings you saw... they tell an ancient story," Jonah explained, his gaze fixed on a symbol etched into the rock. "They speak of a guardian, a creature that protects this place. But there are also warnings. You shouldn't disturb what has been buried."
Skath stepped forward. "If there are answers to be found, we need to know them. We can't just walk away. I feel like it's connected to me, and to you," he said, turning to Lyra.
"And you think disturbing a guardian is the right way?" Jonah countered, his irritation starting to seep into his voice. "You can't understand how dangerous this could be."
"Why are you so sure we're in danger?" Lyra asked, determination growing inside her. "If we have questions, we want answers."
Jonah sighed, his gaze becoming intense. "You have no idea what could happen. Malakar... has returned."
The word made the air around them vibrate, and Lyra and Skath exchanged confused looks. "Malakar?" Skath asked. "Who is that?"
"An enemy I thought I'd left behind," Jonah replied, his face hardening. "An enemy now seeking to reclaim the power that belongs to him."
"And what does that have to do with us?" Lyra asked, her heart pounding in her chest.
"You're tied to this place, and Malakar knows it. He has eyes everywhere, and if he finds out you're here, he won't hesitate to come for you," Jonah warned, his gaze alarmed.
"What should we do?" Skath asked, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down on them.
"We need to find the guardian," Jonah said firmly. "He may be the only one who can protect us. Only he has the power to counter Malakar and stop him."
"And how do we find him?" Lyra asked, her voice trembling but determined.
"The carvings," Jonah replied, turning back toward the cave walls. "These symbols might hold clues. We need to decipher them."
Together, the three began to examine the carvings, trying to understand the hidden message within the ancient symbols. Lyra leaned over one in particular, a drawing of a winged figure holding a sphere of light.
"Look at this," she said, gently touching the symbol. "It looks like a guardian."
"Exactly," Jonah confirmed. "It's a symbol of protection. It could point to where we can find him."
Skath moved closer, scrutinizing the symbol intently. "If we can figure out its meaning, we might find the guardian."
"We also need to consider that Malakar might be getting closer," Jonah warned, his tone growing more serious. "We can't waste time."
"While we search for the guardian, we also need to prepare," Skath added, the determination reflected in his eyes. "We can't leave anything to chance."
As they continued examining the carvings, the sound of light footsteps echoed in the distance. Lyra looked up, her heart pounding again. "What was that?" she asked, panic creeping back in.
"We have to hide," Jonah said, his voice tense. "Quickly."
They hurried to find shelter in the shadows of the cave, holding their breath as footsteps drew nearer. The darkness grew thick, and the silence was heavy with tension.
