van helsing’s diary.

12 september - i have heard folklore, tall tales if you will. old lore told by the ramblings of wanderers. normally, i wouldn’t throw myself into myths and fables, especially while my patients are in need, but perhaps this is a special case. i don’t particularly know what came over me when i left seward in charge of lucy, but today is as good a day as any.

i had traveled to find books of research, not that i knew what i was looking for. the only knowledge i beheld was of mythical creatures, creatures known as ‘vampires’, a silly children's story. these vampires, that i knew at the time, would bite and drink the blood of us humans, these vampires could turn us into them. it was a scary tale, but could be a horrifying truth.

i racked the shelves for books, coming across three i thought would do nicely. a book which was of a madman who claimed these creatures were true, a book which claimed these creatures were fiction, and a book of lore. i sat at a desk, lit a lamp, and began pouring into these books.

the first was fascinating, one would believe a crazed man would not write a book of substance, but this - this is the work of a scared man well within his mind. the man wrote of a creature who looked of a man but lurked like a wolf, a man of the night, of mist and shadow. sharp canine teeth, pale, almost bloodless skin, face defined with the weathering of years, red eyes, claws for nails. if the book had been published as fiction it would have been the talk of europe, but it was published as a dying will, even more horrifying. i skimmed the book, jotting down notes; the creature rests on the soil of its home, religious items repel it, similar to garlic. other strange findings such as reports of powers: control of animals, mind control, transforming into bats and wolves.

the second book provided no such readings, a pessimistic take on all vampire claims, giving explanations for similar sightings and experiences. i chose this particular text to keep my mind open and unbiased but i can feel the myths festering through my brain and embedding themselves, making home in my consciousness. i spent less time examining the reading and went to my third book.

the story was haunting, especially with lucy fresh in my mind. it read of a vampire living amongst humans, slowly picking them off. this text gave more insight on the inner workings of a vampire, the age, the mind cycle, etcetera. there was a child, which was the first victim the vampire took. the creature summoned the child with mind commands, took him in the dark, and bit into his neck, draining the life from the innocent soul. the vampire became younger and stronger and the child lay lifeless upon the grass. the second victim was a man, the vampire planned to change him so he could join his army. the man, too, was summoned and the vampire drank upon his blood but not enough to kill. days pass and i read of the man’s nights. it starts with nightmares, bats knocking into his window, anemic-like symptoms… it ends with wolves, memory loss, and sharp teeth. the similarity to lucy was uncanny, horror nuzzled deep in my gut at the thought of the implications. i packed up my notes and settled in for a night of pondering.

i must not tell john about my findings just yet, and i definitely must not let arthur find out. i have theories to test but i will start with garlic. updates tomorrow once i check in with lucy.

pasting from van helsing’s notes

pale skin, nightmares, commotion in the night, twin bite marks on the neck, anemic symptoms. am i describing the man in the story or lucy, i am scared to find out. a necklace of garlic should ward off our own monster, but i fear for the dear girl's life. i will have to remember to check her teeth, eyes, and fingernails.

i don’t know how much time we have left to save her.
