An arrow buried in her chest. The arrow that killed her. I watch from the sidelines as Seren steps in front of Fen, saving his life while forfeiting her own. “Wake!” An earthquake shakes the ground. A scream tears from my throat, but it is cut off. I can't breathe. "Wake or you will die!” A voice I recognize, but can't place, booms over the chaos that is my mind. I can't breathe. Why can't I breathe?
I am startled from my dream. Oren stands above me, strangling me. This explains a lot. “Finish her,” I observe the room, there are five people—every single one of them is unbonded. My eyes catch on a rider escaping my room, she was the one who let them in.
I can't escape Oren's steel grip around my throat, pushing me into the bed. Of all the ways I could die, this was never one I had imagined. “MINE!” Sphinx snarls. I feel a rush of power run down my spine. Time seems to still. I feel the pressure lessen on my throat and I push his arm away so I can escape. I snatch the dagger on my desk as time resumes.
“How did you–” Oren is cut off.
“Get her!” They all charge at me. I dodge and maneuver my way around them. I slit the throat of the woman who tries to drive a dagger through my leg. I reach for another knife and throw the one I had been holding. It landed in the chest of another attacker. The next person who dares attempt to attack me next ends up with another slit throat. I stab the second to last person in the back, aiming for his heart. Which only leaves Oren. I walk up to him. He had underestimated me. I drive my dagger through the side of his skull.
I hear the door swing open. The adrenaline rush I had had is now wearing off. I fall to my knees, clutching my throat. My heart is beating out of my chest. The only thing I can see now is the room my dad had trapped me in for an entire year. No, it wasn't a room, it was a cell. I recall one of the times when he had his hand wrapped around my throat, squeezing my windpipe. There was no air. Never enough air. I am trying to pull away from him, but a wall blocks any escape I have. A strangled scream escapes my lips.
Strong arms wrap around my trembling body. I can feel my heart rate slow. I take deep breaths as air flows to my lungs. I am able to see the room again. Xaden is the one whose arms are wrapped around me. I slump into his side, relieved.
“You're safe, just breathe.” He whispers so only I can hear.
I stand up, catching his worried eyes before his mask is up. “I am fine, let's go.” I motion for him to lead the way.
Walking out of my room, I see Violet and Liam. Violet doesn't look great. She must have been attacked as well. Xaden leads Violet and I through a secret passageway. One that leads to the flight field. I don't miss that he looks back frequently to make sure I am okay.
Skye, Sphinx, Tairn, Andarna, and Sgaeyl were all waiting for us in the flight field. Sphinx runs over and gently pushes her nose to my chest. I wrap my arms around her head. “I am okay.”
“I felt you panic after.”
“I am okay,” I repeat to the little, worried, dragon.
“I am guessing the Wingleader wants a word,” this voice was one I haven't heard before. It was deep, and commanding. Is it Tairn?
“Yes I want a word,” Xaden says this in Tairn's direction, it was definitely him. “What kind of powers are you channeling to her?”
“None of your business what I choose or do not choose to channel toward my rider.” Tairn's annoyance is obvious in his growl.
“He says–” Violet starts translating only to be cut off.
