“There has to be more we can do,” Bodhi sighs. The fliers need more daggers.

“We are doing the best we can.” Garrick tries to be reassuring.

“They are in their rooms!” Tairn's panicked voice booms in my head. I run, leaving my friends behind.

“Go to the Silver One first,” Skye’s voice is far calmer, but I can still hear a hint of worry.

“How many?” I push the thought in their direction.

“Three in the Silver One's room,” she pauses slightly, “five unbonded in the Red One's.” I push myself to the limit. My lungs struggle to inhale through the panic.

I throw open the door to Violet’s room. An unbonded cadet holds a dagger to her throat. One second, she is there, and the next, she is gone. All of us are looking around, trying to find her.

Violet reappears in front of me. I don't miss the hint of relief in her eyes. I step in front of her, shielding her from the attackers. “You're all dead,” I snarl. I hear a sword clatter on the ground. “You think surrendering will save you? It's against our code to attack a cadet in their sleep.”

“We were just correcting a mistake,” the man who was holding the blade to her throat speaks.

“Dragons don't make mistakes,” I snap, signaling my shadows to strangle two of the attackers. I relish the fear that grows in the leader's eyes. One of my shadows drags a dagger across his throat. I watch as he falls to the ground, dead.

“I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive.” I shouldn't be able to hear Violet, but all of her defenses are currently down. “Yes. You are alive.” I can't help but respond to her mental voice.

“I didn't realize I said that out loud.” Her voice shakes slightly. My shadows pick up on Liam at the door. I know my brother has a soft spot for her.

“What happened?” Bodhi and Garrick finally showed themselves after I had left them in the courtyard.

“Violet and Rylee were attacked,” I can hear Violet gasp. “You guys are on clean up. Go to Rylee's room after.”

“Liam, stay with Violet,” I jog towards Rylee's room. I know my brother and Violet are right behind me.

I open the door to see Rylee on her knees, trembling. It looks like she is having a panic attack. Everyone else in the room is dead. She is clutching her throat and rocking back and forth. Who caused this powerful, strong woman to break into so many pieces? Watching her like this makes that tiny part of my heart, which wasn't hardened, hurt. “Is there anything we can do?” Violet would be one of the few people who is close enough to know something.

She just shakes her head. “We could wake Remi.” I don't want to do that, Remi doesn't need to know about the attack yet. “She needs to feel safe, that at least always worked with Rem.”

I hear a strangled noise escape, Rylee. My feet are already moving before I tell them. I sit next to the shaking girl. Her heart rate and breathing slow. I can feel her slump against my side. “You're safe, just breathe.”

I watch as she stands, and I quickly school my features. She slips on a mask, guarding her emotions from onlookers. “I am fine, let's go.” Ry signals me to lead the way. I stand up and walk out of the door. I lead Violet and Rylee through a secret passageway to the flight field.

The dragons are waiting for us. Sphinx comes running up to meet her rider. I focus on Tairn. “I am guessing the Wingleader wants a word.” He isn't too happy.
