June March stood at the edge of the sand track, her face pulled into a frown as she looked at the sand. She was deep in thought, my stomach in knots as she ran a hand up and down her arms the breeze a little nippy as she stood in her bathing suit top and a pair of jean shorts. She'd admittedly told JJ she didn't want to come today, mostly because she wasn't the biggest fan of his biking. After watching her brother absolutely shred his arm biking when she was nine, she'd never really been a big fan. However JJ had told her he needed his lucky charm by his side all day, he said he couldn't afford to not win...whatever that meant.
"You good?" The voice came from Cleo, June turning her head to look at the girl who was jumping shoulders with her.
"Not gonna lie...I'm not the biggest fan of these things. I skip every year." June said, shrugging her shoulder slightly as she tried to stop chewing on her lip. Her eyes moved from Cleo to JJ who was talking lowly with John B, her eyes lowering to her cup as she looked at the vodka concoction in it. She hadn't drank any of it yet, but she was thinking she might have to go get through this.
The morning had been a bit rough, June having to wait to be picked up by the rest of them since they had all moved into Poguelandia together. Her parents refused, said no and while she was technically 18 and could do what she wanted, she didn't want to mess up the already fragile relationship she had with her parents. So she stayed home. However this particular morning she had spent without JJ, she'd woken up irritated and then they were late picking her up, so late in fact that she was almost sure they weren't coming. They showed up.
Topper had pulled up moments before, and the unspoken hatred between them all seemed to immediately make things tense. Another reason June didn't like going to these things...the kooks always showed out. She looked down at her cup, lifting it to her lips and taking a long gulp of the alcohol.
"You gonna drink it all in one go?" The voice was Zach Roberts, Junes head turning to the side as her entire demeanor brightened a little bit. She hadn't expected him to come.
"Maybe I am...you know me." June said, shrugging her shoulder as she leaned over to pull him into a hug. He was quick to return it, giving her a smile a she pulled back.
"Yes I know you." He said in a laugh, his eyes tracing over her face as she finished her drink. "I'm surprised you showed up to this...I know you don't like the bikes."
"Well I don't think I had a choice. Everyone was going and JJ is racing so..." Zach nodded his head at that, looking to the blonde boy who was messing with his bike, Cleo having left Junes side to help him. He felt a small pang in his heart at her words...he had never been able to convince her to go when he was racing. "You're not racing?"
"Doctor said I shouldn't...he said I need to give my muscles a bit more time to regain strength." His hand pat his leg and although it had been awhile since his leg was shattered, he was still going to
physical therapy for it."Fair enough. Well at least I finally have some good company... everyone else dipped." June said, grabbing Zach by the sleeve and walking him over to where the vodka concoction was at. She got herself another cup, holding one out to him.
"I drove. You have at it." He said, smiling back at her as he refused the drink. She shrugged again, taking a sip from the cup and then moving back to her spot.
"I hate these things. Some shit always happens..." The words were true, although she hadn't been in a couple years. Every time there was an event where the kooks and the Pogues mixed, there was some shit that went down. Zach opened his mouth to speak but the sound of a revving engine pulled June to look, her eyes immediately widening and her heart dropping as she saw who it was. "What's he doing here?"
