FOR ALMOST A YEAR now, you've been struggling with depression. It's hard to explain the cause because there's so many reasons why you winded up sitting in the middle of the beach during midnight. Before, all you did was laugh and smile. Now, all you do is lying on your bed, wanting to be alone. Sometimes you just sleep the whole day. Other times, you cry instead.
Who knew life could be this shitty?
Suddenly, a sound of footsteps could be heard, causing you to look up from your spot. A boy around your age could be seen, walking with his hands inside his pockets. He looked pissed.
The boy kicked the sand in anger, which caused it to fly in your direction. Before you could say anything, the boy then noticed you. He tilted his head to the side slightly, "What? Why are you sitting there?"
Your shoulders tensed at the boy's tone; you didn't like how he snapped so easily.
"I- um, I couldn't sleep..." You stammered.
The boy huffed as he sat down, not too far from you.
It was a bit awkward when you both just sat there, not saying anything to one another. After some time, you glanced at the boy again for a split second and noticed just how handsome he was.
You wondered what his story is.
You didn't exactly know what to say to start a conversation so you just asked him a simple question, "What's your name?"
The boy stared at you for a while before he replied, "Rafe."
"Mines (y/n), nice to meet you." You said with a small smile.
Rafe glanced at you and sighed, "How's your day been?" He asked. You were very much surprised that he even asked you that since he seemed so pissed earlier.
"Horrible." You chuckled bitterly but in reality, you wanted to cry.
"Mines too." Rafe replied with such a dead tone, one that could definitely kill a vibe.
Not knowing what to say next, you just nodded and looked up at the skies. Tonight's sky looked a bit gloomy, or maybe that was how you felt.
"Life..." You breathed out and let out a humorless laugh, "...really sucks sometimes."
"It does." Rafe replied as he pulled out a pack of cigarettes. You turned to him and were a bit surprised that he smokes. You have no problem with smokers though—in fact, you have friends who smoke.
Rafe then asked, "Want one?", offering you some.
"Oh, no thanks," you said with a wave of your hand. He nodded and lit up a cigarette before taking a long drag.
He blew the smoke out before he spoke, "You're not gonna scold me for smoking?"
"No, why would I?" You questioned, wondering why he asked you that.
"There's always people who hates it," he replied with a shrug while he took another drag, "or just me in general."
"I'm sure you're not a bad person," you replied gently, smiling a bit at him. Rafe looked at you in the eyes and raised a brow,
