Chapter 5

Nyx

The Wishing God

Tethered Sisters

Three Centuries Prior

Nyx flew high above the castle now and as far as the boundary would let her touch the sky. She looked around at the chords which danced along the floor below her. She felt the ache in her throat and ignored Syriah's pain.

She recalled her mothers last words to her, "Don't you see Nyx, you're perfect for granting wishes. It's because you're so selfish." Her mothers eyes lit up with bright white light as she looked into Nyx's heart.

"I can see into your soul daughter. There is not hiding from me." She felt her mother inside of her mind. Her hands were cold and clammy as they stretched across The Veil and into her Essence. "Even now," Vaylith spoke her eyes turning an alarming shade of green light which filled the room, "I can see your intent. You can't hide who you are from me Nyx. I see all things. You'll only grant the ones you think are worthy of your time. You watch as the fates weave the Tapestry of Fate and send you the messages, and still you only interact with those you find worthy."

"That's why I would be better at mischief." Nyx mumbled under her breath. Her mothers eyes changed to a fierce white light and Nyx felt the tingling of her skin burning from her gaze. "I take it back, I'm sorry mama, I'm sorry." Nyx held up her hands and cowered before Vaylith. Her mothers eyes returned to the green of The Veil as she looked into Nyx's Essence. "Syriah is softer than you, she's meant to help you find balance. You meddle for fun, it's true, but ultimately you and Syriah make the perfect pair. Twin flames, meant to guide each other home. Like two perfect roses, you with thorns, and and her the petals. You protect her from the outside world stealing her beauty and she protects you from growing to cruel. But you were too cruel Nyx. What you did to Quill's child was too far. I don't know how your father will decide your punishment..." Her mothers eyes returned to their usual green as she stopped looking into Nyx's Essence. "I can see you don't care. That's the problem." Her mother sighed looking over a white columned banister covered in golden roses. She had picked up one of the golden roses and suspend it in the air beside Nyx. "Eat the rose Nyx."

"What?" Nyx took a step away from the rose.

"Eat the rose." Her mother repeated pushing the suspended rose towards her in the air.

"But then I won't be able to travel through The Veil." Nyx whispered.

"Well, only you, we can still bring you through it." She imagined for just a moment pushing her mother over the edge and taking her place as the Seer. She shook her head from the image. Her mothers eyes flashed white with light. "Naughty girl. Now eat the rose." She repeated. "And don't make me ask you again." Her eyes glowed with purple light as she began tp channel her Essence into a fire that Nyx new would cause permanent damage to her soul.

Nyx reached her hand forward and plucked the rose from where it danced before her. The rose made metamorphosis, spinning in the air, becoming a fluid orb before it shrunk down into a small marble. Nyx looked between the golden marble and her mother, who nodded at her and smiled.

She plucked the marble from its suspension and placed it on her tongue. It was cold and tasted of raw honey. She didn't feel any different. It wasn't unpleasant as she bit down on the hard sphere. It burst in her mouth its honeyed contents coating her throat. Then she felt it, and they both heard it. A loud crackling thunder, and a boom from the distance. She keeled over clutching her stomach. It felt as if she had been punched by lightning in the throat and clavicle.
