Chapter 10

Haven

Present day

The Captive's Path

Haven was startled awake by a looming pale figure which hovered above her. She began to cry out when the hand of the man covered her mouth.

"Don't. Your mother is in the barn, and your siblings are asleep. If you scream, they will come, and we will kill them without mercy." The man said with a hiss. Haven couldn't see well in the darkness and she felt heavy all over.

In the darkness all she could make out were his deep red eyes, sharp tipped ears, and long hair. The hand which covered her mouth was covered in tattoos of the sun, the moon, and the heavens. In the center of the tattoos were words written in a language she had never seen. "I'm going to take away my hand and you're going to stay quiet. Nod if you understand." Haven looked up at the red eyed man and nodded. Her eyes bulged with fear. She understood in an instant who... what... he was.

He couldn't be? Could he? But why would elves be so far west of their homeland? And didn't they stay far from human affairs? Haven watched the elf and looked for Halex who had been asleep with her. Her eyes wandered the room but it was too dark for her to make sense of anything except a few shapes behind him.

As her eyes adjusted to the darkness she took in the room. Two large elves stood behind the one who had her covered her mouth, each of them covered in tattoos, with long white hair, and red eyes. A shorter man lurked behind them in the shadows. They were all gaunt, their thinness making them seem ill. Their eyes seemed hollow. She didn't exactly know what an elf was supposed to look like, but she wondered if this was truly it?

The elf who stood directly behind the one towering above her held Halex by his curly brown hair. Halex's mouth was gagged, his hands and feet bound. She could hear him screaming through his gag, "Rugnggnn." His eyes plead with her but she refused to run. She wouldn't endanger her mother or sister and realistically she didn't stand a chance against these four gigantic men. Could she even call them men? Besides, she would never leave Halex behind.

She puzzled at how they'd gotten Halex out of the bed before her as she tried to get up. "No." The elf spoke gruffly as she wobbled pushing her down by her shoulder. She hung out trying to smack him, but lost her balance and was easily sat back down on the bed. In his hand she noticed a rough white cloth. She understood through her haziness how they had pulled it off.

In a violent wave she became nauseous. She leaned forward to vomit on the elf's boots. He stepped back but was not fast enough. Her vomit splashed onto his leather boots and he groaned in disgust. She could barely make out his feet, her vision blurry. He pushed her back into place on the bed and steadied her bending down to look into her eyes. His red eyes stared back at her, the iris seeming as if it was soaked in blood.

"How did you get in here?" Haven mumbled swaying on the bed where she sat.

"You've ruined my shoe." The elf stamped on the floor.

She tilted forward as if she might vomit again and the elf backed up quickly. She noticed the green mist, the same that had been there when she'd been with Aelor and her father in the Veil, all over the surface of the floor. She sighed, her vision growing less blurry. She realized the mist was invading the room and her senses. It began to seep into her nose and eyes making it harder to breath with every moment. The Veil behind them shimmered, appearing to let off steam into the room in the form of the green mist.

"Aelor..." She whispered before falling forward towards the Veil. The elf with he strange tattooed writing caught her and steadied her on the bed.

She felt like a sack of potatoes, the world thick with whatever drugs they had given her to sedate her. Her stomach churned and roiled. "Listen, I'm going to bind you. You stay nice, we stay nice. You bite, or fight, we bite worse. Got it?" He pointed at her.
