BAHRAIN BULLETIN: Lamborghini's New Rivalry Sabotages Sakhir Test Progress
As the second day of testing in Bahrain comes to a close, an unexpected rivalry has stolen the spotlight in the Formula 1 paddock. While much of the pre-season hype revolved around Lamborghini's anticipated battle with RedBull, it is clear that attention has now shifted, following two days of multiple on-track incidents between none other than Tomás "Taz Fuego" Facundo and McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
Throughout the weekend, the two drivers found themselves in constant skirmishes, with the McLaren preventing the Lamborghini driver from catching up to priority-competitor Max Verstappen. This led to visible frustration from Facundo, who took to the team radio to voice his annoyance on multiple occasions.
"Piastri needs to get his priorities straight." A paddock insider commented. "Facundo knows he has the car to challenge RedBull - he doesn't need McLaren to be part of the problem."
When asked about this new-found competition, RedBull driver and close friend of Facundo, Sergio 'Checo' Perez added, "It's completely understandable. You've got someone who has a car that can possibly win the title, and then you have a nobody - someone who's talented, sure, but in a car that's no-where near able to compete. It's a recipe for disaster."
For Lamborghini, it's clear this unexpected rivalry is threatening to derail their 2023 campaign before it even starts. What was meant to be a weekend for fine-tuning their car and gauging their progress against RedBull turned into a series of unwanted distractions, against a team that hardly found itself scording a hundred points in the 2022 season...
_____________________________I had spun off.
In the three years I had driven in Formula 1, I'd never spun off. I'd had my fair share of minor crashes; hitting barriers, driving into walls when the wheels locked, scraping against other cars.
But this was far from a scrape.
It was coming to the end of the afternoon testing session - the last of the whole weekend - and I'd overtaken Oscar early on, able to predict his stubborn techniques like Newton's Third Law. As a result, I'd spent most of the laps chasing down Max and Checo, who was defending him rigorously, all to no particular avail - a situation that only worsened as we lapped the slower cars. Tsunoda, Hulkenberg and Albon let us through with no resistance.
Until it came to Oscar.
Max flew by, pursued by his teammate. I attempted to follow, when Oscar barged in front of me, blocking an overtake.
