I looked up from my meal to see a man in a strange-looking cloak come into the tavern. He sat down, ordered a drink. He stared gloomily at the mug of ale that had been placed before him. I realized he seemed sad and lonely, and decided to be of as much help as possible.

He looked up as I sat down beside him.

"What do you want?" He growled.

"I want to help. I don't like seeing so much misery."

The man uttered a short bark of ironic laughter."If you don't like misery, why are you sitting around in a pub?"

I closed my eyes. I hadn't talked about my father since the incident. "It was my father. He was about to go to sleep when our house was set alight. We were all asleep already, but he woke us all and managed to get us all out in time. He had just got Mother out when the house collapsed on top of him. No matter how much my sister and I screamed and called his name, he never came back out."

The man blinked. "My, how our situations are similar."

But I wasn't done. "And then, just yesterday, the inn we were staying in went up in flames as well. My sister was in there. Then, a woman I didn't even know ran back in and tossed her out the window. She was climbing out herself when the roof collapsed on top of her. I didn't even know her name."

"I do know her name, I believe," said the man, quietly.

I looked up sharply."Really? Who? How?"

He took a deep breath. "Her name was Georgia, and I was her husband."

"Really?"

"Yes. My name is Alphonse," He held out a hand. "What would your name be?"
