The afternoon light filters through the curtains, casting soft shadows across the room. Genevieve sits cross-legged on her bed, scrolling through her phone, her brow furrowed in thought. There's a soft knock on the door, and Victoria steps in, her expression a mix of concern and determination.
"Genevieve can we talk for a minute?" Victoria takes a deep breath.
Genevieve looks up, a flicker of irritation crossing her face.
"Is it about Anastasia again?" Genevieve sighs.
Victoria closes the door behind her, stepping further into the room. She crosses her arms, searching for the right words.
"I know things have been tense with her lately. But I want you to understand where she's coming from." Victoria says in a gentle tone.
"It's ridiculous. Just because she's feeling paranoid doesn't mean she should throw around accusations. Nicholas is my friend!" Genevieve rolls her eyes.
Victoria nods, her voice steady but firm.
"I understand that. But she's scared, Genevieve. This whole situation with the murders... it's shaken everyone. She's trying to process her fears in her own way."
Genevieve's expression hardens, her emotions simmering just below the surface.
"So you think I should just let her think Nicholas is a killer? That's how you help her?" Genevieve asks, trying to keep calm.
Victoria steps closer, her tone softening.
"No, that's not what I mean. I'm not saying she's right. But maybe it's worth considering why she feels that way."
Genevieve clenches her jaw, struggling to hold back her frustration.
"So now you're saying I should entertain the idea that Nicholas is somehow involved?" Genevieve asks, her voice slightly rising.
Victoria raises her hands in a calming gesture.
"I'm not saying he is. I just want you to think about what Anastasia said. Maybe he's acting differently because he's scared." Victoria says carefully.
Genevieve stands up, her emotions boiling over.
"Scared? Scared doesn't make someone a murderer! He's one of my best friends, Mom! How can you even suggest that?" Genevieve says angrily.
Victoria holds her ground, her expression serious.
"Maybe he's the one behind all of this. Have you thought about that?" Victoria asks intensely.
The words hang heavy in the air, and Genevieve feels a rush of betrayal mixed with disbelief.
"How can you say that? You really think he could do something like this?" Genevieve asks, her voice trembling.
Victoria's eyes soften, but she doesn't back down.
"I'm not saying I believe it. But sometimes people hide their true selves. You've seen how twisted things can get."
Genevieve shakes her head, a mixture of anger and hurt filling her chest.
"I can't believe you're even considering this! Nick is not some monster. He's just... he's just scared and overwhelmed. Just like everyone else!" Genevieve says, her voice tight.
Victoria takes a step closer, her voice filled with urgency.
"I'm not saying he's a monster! I'm saying we can't ignore the possibility that he might not be who you think he is. This town is turning everyone into something they're not." Victoria says in a pleading tone.
Genevieve stares at her mother, feeling the weight of her words. A deep frustration welling up inside her.
"Why can't you trust me? Why can't you trust my judgment about my friends?" Genevieve asks, holding back tears.
Victoria's expression softens further, and she reaches out to touch Genevieve's arm.
"Because I want to protect you. All of you. I need you to be aware of the danger. This isn't just about who's guilty or innocent; it's about staying safe." Victoria says softly.
Genevieve pulls away, her heart racing.
"Safe? By blaming Nicholas? By making me doubt my friends? That's not how we stay safe!" Genevieve raises her voice.
Victoria's face hardens slightly, her frustration rising.
"This isn't just a game, Genevieve! People are dying, and we have to consider every angle." Victoria says in a firm tone.
Genevieve shakes her head, her eyes filled with anger.
"I won't let you turn this into a witch hunt. I refuse to believe that someone I care about could do something so horrific." Genevieve says, quietly, but fiercely.
Victoria's face softens again, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"I just want you to be careful. I want you to stay safe." Victoria's voice breaks.
Genevieve looks away, her heart heavy with the weight of her mother's words. The room is thick with tension, and both women feel the gulf widening between them.
"I need to be alone right now." Genevieve whispers.
Victoria nods slowly, understanding the gravity of the moment. She turns to leave, glancing back one last time.
"Just think about what I said, okay?" Victoria says softly.
Genevieve remains silent, her anger simmering beneath the surface as Victoria leaves the room. The door clicks shut, and Genevieve sinks onto her bed, feeling the conflicting emotions tear at her. The shadows in her room grow longer, mirroring the dark thoughts clouding her mind as she grapples with the uncertainty surrounding Nicholas, her friendships, and the haunting reality of their town.
