Across the city, fireworks lit up the sky, painting the horizon in a variety of colors. The roar of crowds echoed through city streets. The U.S. had officially entered 2024 fully.

The White House, Washington D.C.

Inside the Oval Office, President Aaron B. Howe sat at his desk, reviewing documents. While the rest of the country was celebrating, he'd wanted to spend the night working trying to clear out a few things before the start of the new year. Non-classified paperwork, at least. allowing his wife and son to be just behind him, admiring the fireworks from the wide pane windows of the Oval Office.
The peaceful moment was cut off when the door swings open, and a Secret Service Agent rushed in, out of breath.
Agent: "Sir!" the Agent gasps, catching his breath on the edge of the desk.
"We just got a report from NASA. There's a... spatial anomaly forming just off the coastline, within our Exclusive Economic Zone!"
Aaron looked up, eyes staring at the Agent's face.
Aaron: "A spatial anomaly? What the hell does that mean? Could this be a cyberattack, or..?"
Agent: "Unknown, sir, NASA and NORAD are still assessing, but they're advising immediate measures. Potential Chinese Superweapon."
Aaron: "Get the Joint Chiefs in the Oval Office. I want a full briefing in thirty minutes. And move the armed forces to DEFCON 3. Prepare for any attack."
Agent: "Understood, sir!" He turned and ran out the door.

North Pacific Ocean, USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70)
——————
On the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson, the night had been calm until now. Most of the crew was either resting or on routine duty.
In the ship's Combat Information Center, a crew member handed a transmission paper to the captain.
Crew Member: "Sir, direct orders from D.C. We've just been moved to DEFCON 3. They suspect a major threat."
Captain: "DEFCON 3? What's the situation? Enemy aircraft? ICBMs?"
Crew Member: "Not clear, sir," the crew member said, nervous.
"They're saying... an anomaly. Could be non-hostile, but they aren't taking chances."
The captain's eyes darted to the radar screen. It was clear, but that could change.
Captain: "Ready the air wings," he ordered.
"I want all pilots on standby and anti-air systems searching."
Crew Member: "Yes sir.." the crew member's words came out as a small mumble.

Southern Red Sea, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) (nice)

The captain of the carrier had just put on his uniform when a knock came at his quarters door. It was one of his senior officers.
Officer: "Sir, urgent update from U.S. Central Command. We're at DEFCON 3." She said.
Captain: "DEFCON 3? What's happening?" He asked.
Officer: "There's not much information yet. They're reporting an anomaly over U.S. waters. NASA.. NORAD too involved. We've been ordered to full readiness." She said, calmly.
The Captain nodded slowly.
Captain: "Very well. Get the strike group to maximum readiness and inform all ships, we're on high alert." He said.

The Oval Office was far from calm. Papers were scattered across the president's desk as Aaron Howe tried to read the reports streaming in from across the country.
A new Agent ran in, looking even more panicked than the last.
Agent: "Sir, Most of our overseas military bases... they've disappeared from their locations. We're getting reports that they... reappeared in the middle of the U.S." He said.
Aaron: "What do you mean, reappeared? How is that possible? What kind of attack can plop entire military bases halfway across the world?" He shouted, eyes looking around, landing on the picture of George Washington, then back at the Agent.
Agent: "We don't know, sir. One second, they were where they were, the next, ..there! We've confirmed the presence of multiple bases across the Midwest. And that's not all, our naval ships, civilian boats... alot of them have been teleported too. Some just showed up near the U.S. coastline without explanation."
Aaron: "Teleported...?"
Agent: "We're getting radar reports of massive signal disruptions in several areas of the seas, but the vessels seem intact, Their crew was still there and everything. It's like they've been moved here on purpose."
Aaron: "So whoever, or whatever this is, they're focusing on the US itself. If they wanted to attack, they would've done it already." He pauses and thinks..
"Order every available naval vessel to patrol our coasts. We need to secure the mainland. We don't know what's coming next, but I'll be damned if we don't prepare for it." He said.
Agent: "Yes, sir," the agent replied, running out.
As the door closed, Aaron stood still for a moment, watching the last of the fireworks' lights dim in the night sky outside.
"Lord.. Save us from whatever this is.."
