THE POGUES AND ESMERALDA WENT SEPARATE WAYS. After yesterday's events, Esmeralda wanted to be left alone for the rest of the day. John B understood how she felt the moment she saw the ring, and so, he drove back home.

It was the next day and Esmeralda didn't feel the night pass, she couldn't sleep. Every time she shut her eyes she just imagined her mother dead somewhere.

A muffled voice came from the other side of her door, "Esmeralda, open the door." She lay flat on her back, just staring at her white ceiling, trying to count the small cracks. Her head remained still, not a single muscle was moved.

They knocked again, a minute passed and she still didn't answer the door. "I'm coming in." From her peripheral vision she saw the figure of a slim tall man, Rafe. Internally she groaned. She hadn't seen him since the day at the boneyard and it hadn't bothered her one bit.

Rafe walks in and closes the door. "Hey," he clears his throat. "Your dad let me in." She blinked. "Um, listen, I just uh, I want to apologize for whatever I did. I can sense that you're mad at me, and whatever I did, I just wanted to let you know that I'm sorry." He stopped at the feet of her bed.

She hummed, "Mmm, I forgive you." She didn't.

Rafe let out a sigh, "Good because I wanted to invite you today." Esmeralda closed her eyes and brought a hand up to her temples.

"Listen, Rafe, I'm feeling sick. I have the," she paused, "I have the flu, one of our workers has it and it spread." Most of the staff were off today so she hoped that it would sell her lie.

"Oh? Is that why most of the staff is gone today?" Bingo.

She nodded, "Y-yeah, we all caught it at the same time, I guess. I don't want to pass it on to you." She beckoned for him to back away from her.

Rafe nodded in understanding, "Yeah, of course. I'll let Sarah know you won't come, feel better, baby. I love you." Since she advised him to not get near, he blew a kiss to her. She weakly smiled, trying to keep up her act.

After he was gone she quickly got up and locked her door, not wanting anybody else to distract her. And that is how she spent most of her morning, locked up in her room, only coming out for food and the restroom.
