I was at home chilling with Oliver. The diner was still having electricity malfunctioning issues.

I was petting Oliver's fur as I watched the sunset. The sky was a beautiful gradient of orange, pink, and purple. Oliver seemed to enjoy the view as well, his tail twitching with excitement.

It was an amazing view. I'm glad we could still see the sunset through this plastic dome.

As I was thinking, I got a phone call. We'll I'll be danged.  It was Leigh, and just as I expected, she called me.

I picked up the phone and swiped the green dot. "Yes, who may this be?" I already knew who it was.

"It's Leigh... the woman from yesterday... I reconsidered your proposition, and I could really use some comfort and get a load off my chest.."

"Oh, it's you!" I hide the annoyance in my tone. I despised Vermoirs. They make me unbelievably upset. I don't want to shed a single tear of sympathy for this lady.

"What's wrong? Finally wanna trauma dump?" I stroked Oliver's fur.

"Well..." Leigh began to say on the other end of the phone.  "It's complicated. My job, as I mentioned before, hurts people. And they plan on hurting a specific group of people even more..."

My posture straightens up at those words. A specific group of people? She must be talking about me and the Unaffected.

"And I don't wanna partake in it... They forced me to join this job, and now they want to force me to do this job's criteria."

She doesn't want to be with the Vermoirs? They forced her? Oh, how my heart aches. I dont wanna care, but I care anyway...

"Leigh, what do you mean your 'job' hurts people?" I feign innocence. "Are you okay?" The question was honestly more sincere than the others because I was getting worried for her.

I have a new jdea. I'll be a rat. I'll befriend her and make her join our side. I'll make her see the light and be a better person. I just have to gain her trust before I can tell her I and Unaffected.

"Well, I can't explain. Let's say they boggle with the human brain, and they dedicate their lives to a person who doesn't exist anymore."

Hmm, I'm putting the pieces together. The vermoirs make us their little lab rats (oh the irony) and boggle with our minds. And for the devotion to someone... they must be talking about Kronos, the God of Time.

I continued to pet Oliver's fur as I spoke into the phone, "I see... that sounds tough. I understand why you don't want to partake in it."

Leigh's voice piped up on the other end of the phone, "It is tough. I don't know what to do. I want out of this job, but they'll never let me leave."

I talked in a half sympathetic tone, "That must be so difficult for you. Have you tried talking to them about it?"

Leigh sighed deeply on the other end of the phone, "No, I haven't. They're impossible to get through to. They always say,'Do your job or suffer the consequences.’”

I stroked Oliver's soft fur as I pondered my next move. I needed to continue to earn her trust.

"Have you thought about what other options you have besides staying with them?" I asked, trying to appear compassionate and understanding.

Leigh's voice on the other end of the phone softened, "Honestly, I haven't thought about other options. They always make it sound like there is no way out."

I continued to stroke Oliver's soft fur, listening intently to her response. "That sounds really isolating," I replied, trying to express compassion and concern.

"It is..." Leigh replied, her voice small and vulnerable. "I feel trapped and alone in this job. I don't know who to trust."

I felt a pang of sympathy in my chest. It was hard to remain objective when she sounded so sad and lost. I want to help her now.

I took a deep breath, considering my next move. It seemed like Leigh was opening up to me, and I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to offer her some comfort and guidance.

"Leigh, I know this question might sound crazy," I began. "But, have you ever considered that there is a way out?”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Leigh seemed to be surprised by my question.

"What do you mean?" She asked, her tone curious but guarded.

"Well," I continued, choosing my words carefully. "I know what your job is. You're a Vermoir... But I can help you escape if you give me information."

There was another pause. I could hear her breathing on the other end of the line, but she didn't say anything. I could tell that my offer had taken her by surprise, and she was probably thinking about whether or not to trust me.

"How do I know I can trust you?" She finally asked, her voice skeptical.

"Leigh, I know we've had our differences and that you don't know me very well, but I want you to know that I'm on your side." My eyes ponder around thinking about my next words.

"I care about you, and I want to help you get out of this situation. And trust me, I understand what it's like to feel like you're alone and trapped."

I decided that I should also tell her.. "And there's something I need to tell you as well.... You may not like it, but you can still trust me."

I  then take a deep breath before confessing, "The thing is, I'm part of the Unaffected."

Authors Note: Ok, super short chapter today. And I mean, this was really short. I'm so sorry. But I had to post something because I left yall hanging for too long, lol. Also my Wattpad has been malfunctioning, and it isn't allowing me to type right. I hope you can forgive me! Xx
