The Mermaid Mate

Chapter 1 : Moving in

I couldn't remember how long I've been in hiding. My brother and I had lost our parents 7 years ago in a vicious fight where they had been trying to protect us. They laid down their lives trying to keep us save and out of the world's eye. Ever since they've passed on, we have been hunted by my parent's murderers, as we try to blend in with the normal "human" society. Our parents said we were special and that we had a prophecy to fulfill, but we were too young to understand. We're still working on getting stronger and it is a difficult task, since we do not know anyone who is like us, but we're determined to get stronger together.

We're in the middle of the school year but we cannot wait.They have found us again.For 7 years we have been moving from place to place and this is the fifth time we are moving. It was becoming a chore to move.

We moved to the outskirts of Kamdon. It is quiet and peaceful here. It isn't too far away from the city but close enough to the sea. It was perfect. Fluffy white clouds filled the clear blue sky as I walked around the neighborhood trying to get a feel of my new temporary home. This place was perfect. This is the fifth time my brother and I have moved over the past 7 years. It had been hectic but it was one hell of a journey. I'm almost 18 now and finally graduating soon. I can't wait! My brother is 21 and works part time jobs to bring in some money for us.

I'd like to say that my brother and I are normal, but we're far from that. In layman terms, they call us mermaids. We're the majestic creatures of the sea. Besides that however, we're pretty average.
I was standing at 5'10 whereas my brother was 6'3. We were always told that we were tall but it is part of being a sea nymph. We tended to be taller because we needed a long tail for strength to push us against the sea currents while we were swimming. Since I was a female, I was known as a mermaid whereas my brother, who was a male, was known as a triton. We are creatures of the sea so we cannot stand living too far away from the ocean.

Our house was grand. It had a ship like architecture with a balcony on the second floor which makes it seem as though it is the deck of a cruise ship. From the house, the exit to the balcony has complete full glass doors which let the morning sun shine in. It gave the home a very welcoming feel. The balcony was shaped in such a way that it looked like it was the bow of a cruise ship. Together with the sea breeze and the view, it made this house really seem like we were on a ship. I have a feeling that I am going to be spending a lot of time on this balcony. I picked my room on the second floor .It was beside the narrow spiral staircase with beautiful metal bars that led up to the rooftop where we could have a birds view of the neighborhood. This house was amazing. I wondered why we got this place at such a good price. There weren't any records of deaths in this house. I was determined to find out the reason behind this soon.

My brother and I spent very little time moving into this beautiful house since we didn't have a lot of belongings. We kept our stuff to a minimum since we never know when we have to move again. This time round however, I didn't want to move. This place, it gives me a feeling of warmth and belonging. It felt right.

"Hey brother, is it just me or do you think that perhaps this time we could stay?" I asked him
"I hope we do. I have already fallen in love with this place. I don't ever want to leave." I smiled to myself. Guess I wasn't the only one feeling this way.

"Shall we go grocery shopping?" I wanted to get an opportunity to explore the neighborhood before I begin school tomorrow.
"I already did" replied my brother smugly. "I know how excited you get when we move and I didn't want you tiring yourself out before school starts. I promise we'll go for a walk tomorrow"

I smiled at him. He was always so thoughtful like our father. It made me tear up a little. My father used to bring me on walks and we used to go on tiny adventures when I was younger. I missed him. Maybe one day I'll understand why our parents had to die for us. Maybe one day I'll be able to avenge their death. But for now, I'll try and graduate first.
