(A Game of Fate)

Shankar stood at the edge of the wedding hall, the festive music and chatter fading into the background. His eyes remained fixed on Madhavi, who danced with such joy and abandon that it seemed as if the world itself swirled around her. She moved with a grace that captivated him, her laughter ringing out like the sweetest melody. It was as though she was the only person in the room, her presence commanding his every thought, every heartbeat. For a moment, Shankar felt time slow down, the guests and the vibrant decorations blurring into insignificance.

As he watched her, Shankar felt an unfamiliar tightness in his chest, a flutter that was both disconcerting and undeniable. It was a strange feeling—one he had never experienced before. It was as if she were someone he had unknowingly been searching for, someone who filled a space in his life he hadn't even known was empty. Why does she affect me like this? he wondered, a crease forming between his brows. He had faced rivals, cutthroat deals, and even the wrath of his father without blinking, yet here he was, unsteady before a woman whose mere laughter stirred his soul.

Shankar's thoughts tumbled as he continued to watch her, his expression softening against his will. He had always believed that emotions made a man weak, but at this moment, he couldn't deny the pull he felt. He caught a glimpse of something in her—freedom, joy, and a mischievous spirit that made the world seem lighter. It was a side of life he had shut out long ago in his relentless pursuit of power and control.

She shouldn't matter. I should turn away, he told himself, yet he couldn't move. His heart skipped a beat as she finally turned in his direction, her eyes locking with his.

Madhavi froze mid-spin when she noticed him standing there, his gaze unwavering. Her eyes widened for a moment in surprise, then narrowed playfully. With a curious smile playing on her lips, she began to walk towards him, her steps slow and deliberate, like a predator sizing up its prey. Shankar's breath caught in his throat as he watched her approach, his pulse quickening in a way that unnerved him. He had never been thrown off balance by anyone, yet here he was, his carefully constructed walls crumbling before her playful gaze.

But just as she reached within arm's length, the Thakur family surrounded him, pulling him into greetings and polite conversation. Shankar straightened, forcing himself to adopt his usual composed demeanor as he acknowledged their praise.

"Ah, Shankar beta, welcome!" Mrs. Thakur said warmly, her hands adorned with heavy bangles as she folded them in greeting. "It's such an honor to have you here. How is your father, Jai Pratap Rana?"

"He is well, Mrs. Thakur. He sends his regards and apologies for not being able to attend," Shankar replied with a polite nod, his voice steady, though his attention kept drifting back to Madhavi, who now stood beside Mrs. Thakur, a playful glint in her eyes.

Mrs. Thakur's gaze shifted to Madhvi, her lips curving into a smile. "Madhavi, look who's here! Do you recognize him?"

Madhavi's eyes sparkled with mischief as she tilted her head, pretending to study Shankar's face. She put on an exaggerated expression of puzzlement, tapping her chin. "Hmm, I'm not sure, Aunty. Have we met before?"

Shankar's jaw tightened as he fought back a frown, a spark of annoyance flaring within him. He could see the mischief dancing in her eyes, the subtle challenge in her smile. Playing games, are we? he thought, feeling the stirrings of his temper. But instead of reacting with anger, he forced a small, tight smile, deciding to play along. "No, I don't believe we've met," he replied, his voice carrying a hint of sarcasm as he extended his hand towards her. "I'm Shankar Rana. Nice to meet you, Miss...?"
