As the five left the stage, the remaining performances continued. After a brief refreshment break, they rejoined Seoyoung, Jimin, and Jungkook in the audience.
The atmosphere between Taehyung and Jungkook was thick with awkwardness, neither daring to acknowledge the other. Jin, however, exchanged a small greeting with Seoyoung, a momentary distraction from the tension.
When the last performance ended, the anchor took the microphone. "Now... this is going to be a spotlight performance!" They paused dramatically, the crowd buzzing with anticipation. "Which means, whoever the spotlight stops on, will come up and perform. Anything they want. Are you guys excited?"
"YESSS!" the crowd roared.
The spotlight show began, the murmur of voices filling the air. Jimin and J-Hope, both bubbling with excitement, whispered secrets to each other, while the rest of the group sat quietly, caught in their own thoughts. Taehyung stared at the ground, his mind elsewhere, while Jungkook shifted uncomfortably, clearly battling his own hesitations.
The spotlight operator scanned the audience, deliberating where to stop. His attention was drawn to a particular scene-someone nervously fidgeting in the shadow of the famous Kim Taehyung. With a smile, the operator decided. The light stopped on Jungkook.
"It scared me," Taehyung muttered at the sudden flash of brightness. Jungkook blinked, confused, pointing to himself. "Me?"
"Yes, you!" the anchor called. "Please come to the front."
The crowd cheered as Jungkook was reluctantly pushed forward by the others. His steps were tentative as he approached the stage, where a crew member handed him a microphone.
"May we know your name?" the anchor asked.
"Jungkook," he replied, his voice soft but steady.
"And what are you going to perform? Dance? Sing?"
"I'm going to sing. I've been learning recently," he admitted, his words drawing a round of applause from the crowd.
'When did he start learning to sing?' Taehyung wondered silently, the surprise evident on his face.
The lights dimmed, and the crowd hushed, waiting for Jungkook to begin. His hands trembled slightly, but he took a deep breath, trying to calm the nerves surging through him. His eyes swept over the audience, finally landing on one person-Taehyung.
"I-I wasn't supposed to be up here performing," he began, his voice shaky. "But since I am... I think there's something I need to say. I know I hurt someone. Someone who trusted me when I didn't deserve it. I've carried that weight for a long time, and I know I should."
He glanced at Taehyung again, making sure the meaning behind his words wasn't lost. The crowd was oblivious to the significance, but Taehyung understood. Every word hits like a sharp blade.
Clearing his throat, Jungkook leaned closer to the mic. "This song... it's for that someone. Someone I messed things up with. I know I can't fix it now, but I want them to know... I regret it."
His gaze lingered on Taehyung, pleading for understanding. "I think about it every day. I'm sorry."
As the stage crew cued the music, the opening chords of "Back to December by Taylor swift" echoed through the room. Jungkook closed his eyes, leaning into the moment, letting the emotion of the song take over.
