Twenty minutes later, Max sauntered into the bakery like he owned the place, looking far too pleased with himself. Lucy handed him his phone with a raised eyebrow. "Here you go, Mr. Big Business. You're lucky I didn't throw it into a cake batter."
"Oh, I bet you considered it," Max smirked, visibly relieved. "Thanks. I guess..."
Lucy wasn't letting him off that easy. "You're welcome, but seriously? Next time, maybe teach your mom some basic phone manners. You know, like not verbally dropkick the person who answers your phone?"
Max chuckled, shrugging in defeat. "Yeah, she's a bit much."
"A bit much?!" Lucy's eyes widened in mock horror. "Max, your mom is a one-woman tornado in designer heels!"
Max laughed, his steel-blue eyes lighting up in that annoyingly charming way that Lucy hated to admit still got to her. "Hey, I'm just trying to be diplomatic here."
"Diplomatic?!" Lucy snorted, shaking her head. "Max, you're about as diplomatic as a wrecking ball at a tea party."
Max held up his hands in mock defense. "Hey, that's not fair! I can be diplomatic when I want to be!"
Lucy crossed her arms, eyebrow raised. "Oh really? Then go ahead—prove it, Mr. 'Negotiator.'"
Max's expression turned thoughtful for a second, and Lucy could practically see the gears turning. Then he casually dropped a bomb. "Okay, how about this? I can negotiate a deal that benefits both parties. You keep making cupcakes, and I... buy out your bakery."
Record scratch. Lucy's playful smirk vanished, replaced with disbelief. "Wait... what?"
Max, totally unfazed, just shrugged, his tone completely matter-of-fact. "It's still a good business decision. Nothing's changed."
Lucy blinked, as if he had just suggested trading her soul for a latte. "Ruthless doesn't even begin to cover it. I was just flirting with you, and now you're trying to steal my livelihood?! You're unbelievable."
Max, ever the king of cool, raised a brow, his voice smooth as butter. "Flirting? Huh, didn't notice."
Oh, we ALL know he noticed.
Lucy rolled her eyes so hard she practically saw the back of her head. "Don't even try it, Max. You know exactly what I'm talking about. But now? I'm done. You can go."
"Oh, I'll go." Max gave her one of those infuriating smirks that somehow made Lucy's heart betray her. "But this isn't over. Not by a long shot. Next time, I won't be so polite."
Lucy watched as he strolled out of her bakery, that swagger in his step that screamed 'I always get what I want.' Her stomach churned with a swirl of emotions: anger, frustration, and maybe a smidge of... swooning? Ugh. But underneath it all, she knew one thing for sure: she couldn't let Max waltz in and bulldoze over her life—or her bakery.
Lucy was going to fight back, with frosting-covered fists if she had to.
