Colors of the New Order

At first, he didn't pay it much mind.
Was it unusual for a lightsaber to change color? Sure. Definitely. But it was the least of Anakin's worries while he was getting the New Jedi Order on its feet.
Besides, he wasn't even sure it was changing color, perhaps it was just a trick of the light, or nothing more than his imagination.
"I don't think I should be afraid to be angry anymore," he said to Padmé, "it's like you said; to be angry is to be human. The Council were so afraid to let me feel that way, but that doesn't mean I have to be. I can manage my emotions on my own, I see that now. I have to work with them, not against them."
Padmé smiled - that radiant smile that filled his heart with the warmth that came with their adoration for each other.
"I'm proud of you, Ani," she murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek, "and I'm happy for you. This is exactly what you deserve in life."
"What both of us deserve." Anakin replied, smiling back.
He'd stopped paying attention to the color of his lightsaber after that, until the day it suddenly occurred to him that it definitely wasn't the color it used to be.
"What's the matter?" Obi-Wan asked when he noticed him staring at the shimmering blade of light in the vacant training hall after the New Order's students had left for the day.
Anakin didn't take his eyes off his lightsaber.
"Don't you think it looks different?" He responded.
Obi-Wan came to stand beside him and the two frowned at the saber in perplexed silence.
"It does look different." Obi-Wan agreed finally.
"It's darker."
"Darker?"
"In terms of shade, I mean."
"Well you're more in-tune with your lightsaber than I am, Anakin. Does it feel like it's different?"
"A bit..."
"Well? How so?"
"I dunno. I feel more... connected to it. More than ever before."
Anakin glanced at his former master.
"Does that make sense?" He asked.
Obi-Wan scratched his beard thoughtfully.
"Indigo." He said finally.
"S'cuse me?" Anakin demanded.
"Your lightsaber has turned indigo."
"I don't understand?"
"Indigo. It's a mix of blue and purple-"
"Yeah I know what indigo is, but as far as I can remember, my lightsaber was blue when I first got it."
"Did you get a new kyber crystal for it?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"I think I would remember if I did!"
"Alright, alright. It's just very unusual for a kyber crystal to change color on its own."
Obi-Wan paused, then raised an eyebrow at him. "You haven't been tampering with it, have you?"
"Why would I do that?" Anakin shot back, "no, I haven't. But I've been noticing this for a while now."
"Noticing what?"
"The color change. At first I didn't pay much attention to it, but it's been like this for a while."
Anakin held the lightsaber a little closer to his face, just barely feeling the heat of the blade on his skin, taking in the vibrant blue-purple hue of it.
It was beautiful, when he really thought about it. Whatever was happening to his lightsaber was strange, but maybe that didn't necessarily mean it was a bad thing.
Maybe it was the exact opposite.
"Master Windu has a purple lightsaber." Obi-Wan said after a long silence had stretched between them.
"Yeah, I know that," Anakin replied, resisting the urge to roll his eyes, "and it means he channels Dark Side energy to fight without falling."
If he was being honest, he always saw Master Windu as a bit of a hypocrite for that, especially when it came to Anakin's own falling. And Lionel certainly wouldn't hesitate to say the same.
"What does indigo mean?" He asked, praying this wasn't about to become a lecture.
"An indigo lightsaber is a combination of the traits of a blue lightsaber and a purple one," Obi-Wan mused, "so if yours is starting to turn purple..."
He glanced at Anakin, who sighed.
"I'm in control of my anger," he blurted defensively, "I wasn't when I was younger, and that was why I fell. But I've learned from that, Master. I can let my emotions fuel my connection to the Force without letting it control me. And I would have been a much more powerful Jedi before if I'd just been allowed to-"
"Anakin," Obi-Wan cut him off, and Anakin braced for his disapproval before he noticed he was smiling at him, "you don't have to explain yourself to me. If you're learning to work with your emotions rather than against them I am nothing but proud of you. And if you got a new kyber crystal to reflect your new connection to the Force, I-"
"But I didn't!" Anakin interrupted, "honestly, I don't know why it changed color."
Obi-Wan furrowed his brow, before taking his own lightsaber from his belt.
"Take a look at this, then." He murmured, and ignited his own blade.
At first, Anakin didn't see what he was getting at, until he looked closer at realized the color of Obi-Wan's lightsaber was a little off as well.
It wasn't indigo like Anakin's, however. It had a more greenish hue, like the sea.
"Yours changed too?" He asked, and Obi-Wan nodded.
"I didn't think much about it until you brought it up," he said, "but I had noticed something was different, like you did. I even took my kyber crystal out to make sure it wasn't damaged. It's not, but I don't remember it being this... green."
"It's teal now?"
"No no no, cyan. Teal is much darker. You don't know anything about the subtleties of color, Anakin, your choice of robe color makes that clear."
"Hey, what's wrong with dark colors?! Beige hurts my eyes in the sunlight!"
"The point being, my kyber crystal changed color too, and I don't think anything like that has ever happened before."
Anakin felt an undeniable flutter of anxiety.
"So... what does it mean?" He asked.
"I'm not sure," Obi-Wan admitted, "but I don't think it's anything to be worried about. We'll just have to be more observant, tell each other if we see any new changes."
Anakin nodded.
"Alright," he said, "sounds good to me."
