"You sign up?" Deakin asked as he came to lean on the wall next to you.
"Of course I did, double credit coupons for the winners? anyone would be an idiot to pass on that"
He gave you an unamused expression "gee, thanks"
You quickly backpedeled "I mean- if you're interested, in fighting then- you know what I mean!"
Deakin had been in the fortress longer than you, he started showing the newcomers around in order to get extra credit coupons. You originally ignored him, uninterested in being shown around when you first arrived, but eventually you came around and you had somewhat of a friendship.
"Probably a good thing you're interested in fighting, then. Heard his grace has been deducting half your credit earnings ever day since the shoe incident and I heard you got in trouble again yesterday?"
You scoffed "it wasn't even that bad"
"Didnt you loosen all the screws on their bunks, too?"
"Oh did they finally fall out?" you couldn't hide the grin.
Deakin rolled his eyes "honestly, don't you think it would be easier to stop playing these pranks?"
"Maybe, but I couldn't keep annoying his grace without them"
He sighed, shrugging "I'm surprised though"
"Surprised?"
"Mhm" he nodded, pushing himself off the wall "usually troublesome folk like you would have been taken care of, its unusual the Duke has let you run around for so long"
You chuckled "well he has to catch me first"
"Last call for bets, first round is in five minutes!" Roussimoff called out to the bystanders around the ring.
You moved away from the wall, doing a few simple stretches in preparation for your name to be called for your round.
Deakin shook his head "well, I'm going to grab something to eat, want anything?" you shook your head "suit yourself, I'll head back before your match" he waved as he wandered off.
When you first arrived the idea of the Pankration ring was baffling to you, allowing the inmates to fight was surely a recipe for trouble? but after you entered your first match about a month after your arrival you realised why so many people enjoyed it.
You hadn't been much of a hand to hand combat person in the overworld, in fact, it took you a few hard knocks before you got the hang of it. Even with your high stamina, it only got you so far when it was all you had in the ring.
It became one of the other things you looked forward to alongside your pranks and the weekly annoying of Wriothesley.
The crowd gathered around the ring as the matches started, you liked it when it got busy as you enjoyed being able to hide amongst the crowd. Not that Wriothesley or the guards would try and pluck you out of the Pankration ring, but you liked to know you could easily slip away through the excitement if you needed to.
"Our next match is against two of our reigning champions in the ring. Winning by a landslide last season, give it up for The Landslide!" the crowd roared as the contender took to the ring, he was somewhat new to the Fortress, having only been an inmate for about four months.
"On the other side tonight, is the infamous troublemaker that we hate to see but love to know, let me hear it for The Rat!" you skipped up the stairs as the crowd chanted.
It was Wriothesley that gave you the nickname, it was definitely said with pure venom the first time he used it. After a while it became as natural as Wriothesley being known as the Duke, other inmates called you by it casually; some even respected that you had been bestowed a nickname by the man himself.
