Dr. Gautron rolled up to a stop for the traffic light, right outside the heart of Helix Gates. He abruptly leaned back in his seat, letting all tension in his body loose. He let out a quiet sigh as he looked at the other cars around him. Cass was doing the same except with people. One of her pastimes was to people watch. She recognized some of the people walking down the sidewalk on her window - they were mainly businessmen and women that walked past every weekday morning, on their way to work like the majority of the citizens of Helix Gates were doing. They didn't bother handing out money to the homeless - Cass assumed they were just saving up or investing in something, which she understood and accepted. Sometimes, just for fun, Cass liked to make up outrageous backstories of these people, despite knowing nothing about the pedestrians. Maybe the man in the tacky tan suit with a bit of a limp in his walk was an athlete once, but he broke his ankle really badly, which altered his way of life for as long as he lived, and he couldn't continue participating in sports, so he decided to work in an office cubicle for the rest of his days. Stories like that kept Cass entertained in the grim times of living on the streets. The light turned green again. Dr. Gautron sat up and grabbed the wheel again, driving straight for most of the way, until he had to take a few left and right turns. Milo was sitting on the front console this time and not particularly near Cass. It seemed that he had grown slightly closer to Dr. Gautron, despite all the testing he has done on him so far. Milo stared out the windshield at the cars ahead him. It was going to be a long trip for a little cat like him.
Dr. Gautron pulled into the parking lot of the labratory and pulled into the parking spot with the sign that read "RESERVED FOR DR. PERRY GAUTRON". He parked the car, took the keys out of ignition, and undid his seatbelt.
"Cass, we're here."
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Right. I guess we are."
Cass took Milo out from under his arms and lead him out into the parking lot. She held onto him tightly, afraid that someone would notice her smuggling him into the building. She paced behind Dr. Gautron like she had done the night before, walking so close behind him that her head was almost touching his back. She could smell some cologne coming off of him, but there wasn't much there. Dr. Gautron pushed open the doors and waved to his co-workers. A disgusting feeling bubbled up in his stomach in fear that others would notice Cass. Despite this feeling, Dr. Gautron kept his cool and walked at a normal pace. He punched in the password for every door he stopped at while walking down the hallway to his office. At the last door, he stopped in the middle of entering his password. He was entranced with the idea that someone was watching him - despite being the only one in the hallway, aside from Cass.
"INCORRECT PASSWORD. PLEASE TRY AGAIN." the door's security system blared, making Cass jump a little.
"Come on, Gautron. Snap out of it." Cass urged.
Dr. Gautron shook his head and entered the password correctly this time, the last set of doors opening to lead him to his office, which was the first door on the right. He pulled out his lanyard and swiped his card through the lock. He entered his office, flicking on the fluorescent lights that beamed down on the white tiled floor. He set down his satchel, took off his jacket and slipped his lab coat on, fixing his tie. Cass took off her jacket and placed it on the coat hanger, below Dr. Gautron's.
Dr. Gautron's main focus for the day was to do more testing on Milo. He had a great desire to know more about his species and how on Earth he ended up here. He wasn't too worried about his patients at the moment - his assistant, Dr. Flax had all of that covered, and if something bad happened, she would tell him right away. She hadn't contacted him in a while, so he assumed everything was going according to plan.
But it wasn't. Little did the two know, things were going wrong. Horribly wrong. Many were gravely ill and incredibly close to death. Dr. Gautron's "special cure" hadn't been working, and in the near future, both Cass and Dr. Gautron's lives would crumble apart.
