Kayla's POV:
Chapter 32:
Kayla sat at her desk, the soft glow of her laptop lighting up the room as she finalized her application for design school. It felt surreal, being here, on the verge of a new beginning. She clicked through the last few questions, double-checking her answers, and finally, with a deep breath, she hit "submit."
For a moment, she just sat there, staring at the confirmation screen. The words seemed to blur, but the weight of what she had just done settled over her like a warm blanket. This was it—her official step toward the future she had been dreaming about for so long.
The past few weeks had been a whirlwind of healing and rediscovery. Without the constant fear of Devin in the background, Kayla had found herself again. She had started to remember what it felt like to live without fear, to make plans for her future, and to dream big. And now, with her school application submitted, that future felt closer than ever.
Her phone buzzed on the desk, pulling her from her thoughts. She picked it up and smiled when she saw it was a message from Isaiah.
Isaiah: How's everything goin'?
Kayla grinned, her heart swelling with warmth. She quickly typed out a response.
Kayla: Just submitted my application! I'm nervous but excited.
Isaiah's reply came almost instantly.
Isaiah: That's amazing! You're on your way, Kay. Proud of you.
Kayla leaned back in her chair, feeling a wave of pride wash over her. For so long, she had been lost in the chaos of her life, but now, she felt like she was finally stepping into who she was meant to be.
Lena, who had been sitting on the couch, noticed Kayla's smile and sat up. "You done?"
Kayla nodded, still a bit in shock. "Yeah, I just submitted it."
Lena jumped up, rushing over to hug her. "Girl, this is huge! I'm so proud of you."
Kayla hugged her back, feeling a surge of gratitude for Lena's constant support. "I couldn't have done it without you, Lena. You've been here for me through everything."
Lena pulled back, her eyes warm with affection. "That's what friends are for. But this is all you, Kay. You took your life back, and now you're about to take over the world."
Kayla laughed, though she couldn't help but feel that maybe Lena was right. For the first time in a long time, she wasn't afraid of what came next. She was excited.
That evening, Kayla decided to visit her mom's house. It had been a while since she'd sat down with her mom and brothers, and now that her application was submitted, she wanted to share the news with them. As she pulled up in front of the house, a sense of nostalgia washed over her. This house had been her refuge during the hardest times, and now, it was a place of peace.
She walked inside to the sound of laughter coming from the living room. Isaiah and Jordan were sitting with their mom, and when they saw Kayla walk in, their faces lit up with smiles.
"There she is," Jordan said, standing up to hug her. "How's it goin', Kay?"
Kayla smiled, feeling a burst of excitement. "I just submitted my application to design school!"
Her mom gasped, standing up to hug her. "Oh, honey, I'm so proud of you! I knew you'd get back to your dreams."
Isaiah grinned, crossing his arms as he leaned against the wall. "Told you you'd get there. You're unstoppable."
Kayla laughed, feeling a rush of happiness. "It feels so good to be moving forward again. I was scared for so long, but now... I'm ready."
Her mom held her hands, her eyes filled with pride. "You've been through so much, Kay, but look at you now. You're strong, and you're taking control of your life. That's all I've ever wanted for you."
Kayla felt tears well up in her eyes, but they were tears of joy this time. Her family had been her foundation through everything, and now that she was finally stepping into her own, their love and support meant the world to her.
"We gotta celebrate this," Jordan said, clapping his hands together. "Kayla's about to take over design school, and Zay's goin' back to school too. We got big things happenin' in this family!"
Isaiah chuckled, nodding. "Yeah, we do. We're all movin' forward."
Kayla sat down with them, feeling the warmth of the moment settle over her. They spent the rest of the evening laughing, sharing stories, and talking about the future. For the first time in a long time, Kayla wasn't worried about what was coming next. She knew there would be challenges, but she also knew she had the strength to face them—and she had her family by her side every step of the way.
Later that night, after she had returned to Lena's apartment, Kayla sat by the window, staring out at the quiet city. The stars were bright tonight, and as she watched them twinkle in the sky, she felt a deep sense of peace. Her life wasn't perfect, and there were still pieces she needed to rebuild, but she was on her way.
Her phone buzzed again, and she smiled when she saw it was a message from Jordan.
Jordan: Proud of you, sis. You're killin' it.
Kayla: Thanks, Jay. We're all killin' it.
She set her phone down and took a deep breath, letting the calm of the night settle over her. The fear, the pain, the darkness that had once consumed her life—it was all behind her now. And in front of her was a future filled with possibilities.
Kayla was ready for whatever came next.
