Kayla's POV:

Chapter 23:

Kayla lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, her mind spinning with everything that had happened over the last few days. She had filed the police report, started the process for a restraining order, but even with all that, she didn't feel safe. Not really. Devin had a way of making her feel like he was always there, just out of reach, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and she jumped, her heart pounding in her chest. Slowly, she reached for it, her fingers trembling as she unlocked the screen.

A message from Devin.

Devin: I'm here.

Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, it felt like the walls were closing in around her. He was here? What did he mean? She shot up from the bed, her heart racing as she rushed to the window, her hands shaking. She peeked through the curtains, scanning the dark street below.

Nothing.

Her mind raced. Was he really out there? Or was this just another one of his twisted games, another way to make her feel powerless? She didn't know anymore. The lines between reality and the fear Devin had planted in her mind were starting to blur.

"Isaiah! Jordan!" she called, her voice trembling.

She heard footsteps from the living room, and a moment later, Isaiah appeared in the doorway, his face tense with concern. "What is it, Kay?"

She held up her phone, her hands shaking as she showed him the message. "He's here. Devin just texted me. He said he's here."

Isaiah's eyes darkened, his jaw clenching as he read the message. Without a word, he turned and called for Jordan. "Jay! Get in here!"

Jordan rushed into the room, his face hard as he took in the situation. "What now?"

Isaiah handed him the phone, and Jordan's expression turned even darker. "He's playin' games with us. But we ain't gon' let him."

Kayla felt the fear tightening in her chest, her pulse racing. "What if he's really out there? I... I can't—"

Isaiah stepped closer, his voice firm but calm. "We're gonna check it out. Don't worry, Kay. He ain't gon' get near you. You stay here, and lock the door behind us. We got this."

Kayla's hands were shaking as she nodded, her heart racing. "Be careful. Please."

Isaiah gave her a reassuring nod. "We will. Just stay inside."

As they turned to leave, Kayla rushed to the window again, pulling the curtains aside just enough to watch as Isaiah and Jordan walked outside. Her chest tightened as she watched them scan the street, their eyes sharp, their bodies tense, ready for anything.

For a moment, everything was quiet. The street was empty, no sign of Devin. But that didn't mean he wasn't out there, hiding in the shadows, waiting for his chance.

Her phone buzzed again, and her heart leaped into her throat as she looked down at the screen.

Devin: You really think they can protect you?

Kayla's blood ran cold. He was watching. He had to be. He could see them out there, could see everything. Her hands shook as she typed back, her fear quickly turning to anger.

Kayla: Leave me alone. It's over.

There was a long pause, and for a moment, Kayla thought maybe he had finally backed off. But then her phone buzzed again.

Devin: It's never over. You're mine.

Kayla's breath caught in her throat, her body trembling. She felt trapped, like no matter what she did, no matter how far she ran, Devin would always be there, always waiting. But she couldn't let him win. She couldn't let him control her life anymore.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her, and she turned around to see Isaiah and Jordan back inside, their faces grim.

"He's not out there," Isaiah said, his voice tight. "But we know he's close."

Jordan nodded, his jaw clenched. "He's watchin' us. But he's too much of a coward to show his face."

Kayla's heart was still racing, but she forced herself to stay calm. "He's messing with us. He sent another message. Said it's never over."

Isaiah's face hardened, and Jordan's fists clenched at his sides.

"Let me see that," Isaiah said, and Kayla handed him her phone. His eyes scanned the message, his expression darkening. "He's not gonna stop. We need to call the cops again. Let them know he's makin' threats."

Kayla nodded, but her stomach twisted with fear. She had already gone to the police once, but now Devin was escalating. She didn't know what he would do next, and the thought of it made her feel sick.

"I just want this to end," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I don't know how much more I can take."

Isaiah stepped closer, his voice softening. "I know, Kay. We're gonna end this. But you gotta stay strong, okay? We're with you."

Jordan crossed his arms, his face still tense with anger. "We'll call the cops. But if he shows up again... we handle it ourselves."

Kayla's breath hitched, the weight of their words settling over her like a heavy blanket. She was scared—terrified, even—but she knew Isaiah and Jordan weren't going to let anything happen to her. Not while they were around.

But still, the fear lingered.

She wasn't sure if Devin was ever going to let her go.
