As I was studying in my room, a sudden scream cut through the silence. Aunty was shouting at the top of her lungs:
“You b*tch, how dare you lay a hand on my innocent son, just because he asked you to make him some coffee!”

Her words left me stunned. I tried to defend myself, saying, “I didn’t slap him for that—he was...” But Ayush interrupted, putting on an act. “Then what? You slapped me so hard... Look, Mom, there’s even a mark!”

I couldn’t hold back any longer and shouted, “Drop the act, Ayush! You tried to misbehave with me, and that slap was well deserved.”

Without warning, Aunty slapped me across the face, her eyes blazing with anger. “How dare you accuse my son of such things... Get out. GET OUT of my house right now!” She grabbed my arm and dragged me out.

Standing outside their closed door, I felt the weight of my situation sink in. It was 10 at night, and I had nowhere to go. A mix of relief and anxiety washed over me—I was free from that toxic place, but now what? I only had my phone with me.

I called Rhea, my only hope. She listened to my story, anger simmering in her voice as she said, “Come to my place right now. Mom and Dad won’t mind you staying here.” It wasn’t like I had any other options, so I called a taxi and made my way to Rhea’s home.

When I arrived, Rhea was livid at Ayush’s behavior. “Don’t worry, you can stay with us. And it’s actually a good thing—you’re out of that nightmare now.” Her support gave me a sense of relief, but doubts about my future loomed over me. My funds, which were supposed to be for my studies, were controlled by my uncle and aunty. I confided in Rhea about my fears, and she reassured me.

“We’ll figure it out together. Besides, there are only three months left until college ends. After that, we can both find jobs, and everything will fall into place.” She made it sound so simple, even though deep down, I knew it wouldn’t be. But with Rhea’s encouragement, I felt a glimmer of hope.

Little did I know, this was just the beginning of a new set of challenges...
