𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈
We leave at the crack of dawn to go talk to Mikey Bates. We didn't want to waste another second leaving Reid with that man. So me and Prentiss got straight on the road while the other's continued to dig around the house and visit the coroner.

"I barely slept a wink," I complain to Prentiss on our way to meet with Mikey Bates. "I couldn't stop thinking about Reid, and Morgan snores like a bear." Prentiss laughs as my complaining. I frown and turn to her. "I promise I'm not always this miserable," I add. She nods with a smile.

"I believe that. We all become different when a person we love is in trouble," she responds. I hesitate to respond to that. My initial reaction was to deny loving Spencer, but then I realised she might not have meant it how I took it. I had love for Reid - platonic love, of course. I frown in my thoughts, but quickly shake them away when Emily speaks up again.

"How are you and Morgan? I sense some.. tension since I first joined the department," she asks. I pause before I answer, trying to think how to even answer this.

"I mean.. no, we're good. It's just.. this case, that's all. Once this is all over, and the team goes back to normal, so will me and Morgan," I respond, turning my head out the window so I can't see her reaction. She pulls the car into park a few minutes later.

"Here we are," she says, jumping out the car and knocking on Mr Bates door.

"Hi, Mikey Bates?" Emily asks, the man nodding. "We're here to ask you about Tobias Henkle. You used to sponsor him in NA?"

"My goodness, I haven't seen that boy in over ten years. How's he doing?" Bates responds.

"We just need to ask you some questions. You two were programmed together?" I ask.

"Small town, we all get lumped together. I was a drunk, but Tobias was a whole different animal. He was a Dilaudid addict - heroin. He used to cut it with a psychedelic. That boy was looking to escape as far from reality as he could get. Addicts don't get excuses, but if someone ever needed to self-medicate, it was that boy."
