Somehow I woke up back in my old room, in the house I once called home. But it felt different I just couldn't pin point why. The smell of breakfast and faint chatter led me to the kitchen. As I entered, the chatter stopped I looked around to find no one inside or in the living room adjacent. Smoke started to rise from the pots so I rushed over to turn them off.
But the smoke kept rising, it began to fill the kitchen. I tried to open the front door but the heat burned my hand. "Fuck," I winced. I ran to the windows but it wouldn't budge. I looked at a vase I had made for my mother and picked it up and threw it at the window.
It didn't work either. "No!" I kept banging and banging on the window but it didn't break.
"Please," I sobbed, there was smoke all over and it made it hard for me to see and breathe."Nicki! Help!" My mom's voice screamed from back in my room. I ran to my door but it was locked shut.
"Mom open the door!" I screamed, "Hurry!" I kicked and each time I kicked she screamed louder.
"Lord help me!" My father called out. I gave up trying to open the door and started to weep. Not even noticing that the screams had stopped.
"Nicolette." A women's voice from behind the door called.
"Huh?" I started to back away from the door. There was only one person who called me Nicolette and that wasn't her voice.
"Come inside. It's safe now." Once she said that the door slightly creaked open.
I looked behind me and smoke was making its way towards me. I had no choice so I walked inside and was met with a white void. I turned in circles and saw no one.
"Who's here? Where am I?" I called out.
"That's not important right now." The voice was behind me now. I turned to face a woman who looked like she was from centuries ago. "What's important right now is you. You are not safe, We are urging you to leave."
"Who are you?" I asked. She looked oddly familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. "Have we met?"
"No. And that's also unimportant. Nicolette listen to me, you need to leave. Go to the river nearest to you and they will come." She held out her hand and a gold necklace appeared in it. "Take this and go."
"I'm so confused. You need to tell me what's going on right now," I sighed, "I'm so tired of being left in the dark,"
"That's what we are. Darkness. Every super natural being that walks this earth. Some are just better at controlling it. And you Nicolette, you have a lot of darkness, that makes other people want to control it... So..." She vanished from in front of me, "You need to do as I say before it's too late." She whispered from behind me.
I turned to see her and lots of other girls of all ages lined up next and behind her. "I'm scared. I can't do it." I admitted.
"Yes you can. You are the last original Devereaux. Now you must carry the power of every Devereaux that has passed on. Remember you are never alone," She said smiling, "Goodbye Nicolette." And Just like that she vanished.
