"Inside me, something seethes. Inside me, some feral animal claws at my ribcage, trapped.

That stupid Christmas tree. Sitting there, beautiful and smugly. Anastasia took a deep breath as she walked over the tree and starting to take the ornaments off, setting them in the small brown box that Bean sat beside, judging her with her beady eyes. One by one, she dropped the ornaments into the box, restraining the urge to toss them against the wall as tears fell down her cheeks. Despite how furious she was at Percy---that stupid man---she couldn't break his heart like that. Christmas was his favorite holiday, and it had started to be hers as well.

Had.

She got to the last ornament, and her body froze as she took it in her hands. An ugly, golden dahlia that was meant to be a thing of sunrays. Zella had made it one day when Anastasia tried to teach her how to control the sunrays, but she always hated that. She preferred to deal with combat and prophetic nature of their father. They were always so different. She never should've taken it out, if Jason was anything, it was a bad omen.

Percy had looked at her confused as she walked out of their bedroom and placed it in a hidden spot of the tree. A place she couldn't look unless she searched for it. Slowly, she had been opening up pieces of herself that she had forced away for so long. Percy was patient with her, as when he asked all she said was it was from before camp, and all he did was give her that proud smile and press a kiss to her cheek.

Without thinking, Anastasia turned and threw it against the far wall, watching as it forced a hole into the wall between the main room and their bedroom. She fell against the wall, sliding down it as she put a hand over her mouth, allowing the tears to fall down her cheeks. Bean hurried over to her, forcing herself onto her lap to allow her to cuddle up to her. It only made Anastasia sob worse.

It took a long time for the sobs to start, but once she saw the tree, her anger rose. She flicked her wrist, and a sun-ray flew through the window, hitting the tree at the perfect spot to start a small fire. A small fire that grew larger—bright yellow flames danced around until the tree was gone. She squeezed her hand and the mini solar flame died out as fast as it rose.

Her eyes darted around the home, and her eyes began to tear up again, especially as her eyes landed on Percy's presents for her, and her presents for him. They laid away from the tree—thank gods—but she had refused to open his gift. Bean whined, and she sniffled as she looked down at him, petting his head.
