(A Year Later)
"Hey 'Maine whatcha doin'?" I said, crawling in his bedroom window.
"Oh, hey Jay. I'm just relaxing. Joseph's been making us rehearse more and more each day ever since we auditioned for Motown," he sighed, sprawled out on his bed. We were now 13 in 7th grade, and the Jackson 5 were thriving in our local community.
"Dang, that sucks...Wanna come play basketball with me?" I asked, hopping on his bed.
"Sorry I can't, Joseph said we can't leave the house."
I squinted my eyes at him. "Ugh, well where's Tito? Maybe he'll play with me."
"He's in the kitchen washing dishes."
I got up and started towards the door.
"Wait no! Don't go out there! Joseph will see you!" He exclaimed.
I panicked and scrambled from the door's view back to his bed, terrified.
"We're not supposed to have company today either," Jermaine said, jumping up to close the door.
"Oh."
"Yeah, that was close," Jermaine said.
Joseph was a scary man. He commanded that his children call him by his first name out of respect. I made note never to talk to him or call him anything. He usually didn't have any problems with me coming around because it was just me and my aunt, but nothing could hold the boys back from reaching their full potential as superstars.
"Say, how much time do you have left on your break?" I asked.
"Mmm..." He checked his watch. "About 15 minutes."
"Well, maybe I can run home and get a board game for us to play."
"Or...we could do something else," he said, with a mischievous smile.
"Yeahh! We could sneak down the street to the candy store!" I exclaimed, elated at the chance of sneaking Jermaine out.
"No, that's stuff we did when we were kids! Let's do something more fun."
I felt my balloon of hope pop. Technically, it was only a year ago.
I flopped on his bed and stared at the ceiling. "What else is there to do?"
"We could play Truth or Dare?" he asked.
My eyes lit up. "Oh, sure! I'll go first. Truth or Dare?"
"Truth," he replied.
I paused for a moment to think.
"Is it true that you have a crush on Lindsay Williams?" I asked, smirking.
"What?! No. Who told you that?"
"Tito."
He rolled his eyes. "He's always talking. I like someone else."
"Oh, really? Who is it?"
"Umm...I don't really wanna say..."
"Come on 'Maine. You always tell me your crushes."
"Well, it's just 'cuz this one is different."
"How so?"
"Mmm... I've known her my whole life, she's my best friend, and she's super hot."
I scratched my head.
"Ok, well there's Sarah, but we didn't meet her 'till last month, and Arianna, but you dropped her when she started getting too clingy, and Bethany. She looks okay I guess. I don't know about super hot, but-"
