The next few days had Jeonghan jumping at shadows. Seungcheol barely left his side, but when he did, he made sure Junhui or Minghao were with him. Jeonghan worried that all the stress from Douglas’s attack had hurt the babies. Minghao had helped them listen to the babies’ heartbeats again, but even he looked worried when Jeonghan complained of back pain and a listlessness that made even the easiest tasks seem like challenges.
He was curled up in the study, struggling to focus on the book in his hand, when he heard Seungcheol and Minghao talking in whispers in the hall. Though he knew he shouldn’t eavesdrop, he couldn’t help tiptoeing to the door.
“You want us to drag Jeonghan seven hundred miles to see a doctor? Nine hours in the car?”
“He’s a pack doctor. He has experience with pack births, and lots of it. And he’s part of a pack himself. Jeonghan needs some reassurance. His symptoms are probably just delayed shock and stress, but they’re worrying him. Hell, they’re worrying me.”
“There’s no one closer?”
“Not that I know of.”
“I don’t think this is a good idea.”
Maybe Seungcheol didn’t, but Jeonghan did. He pulled open the study door, and Minghao and Seungcheol’s eyes turned to him.
“I want to go. Soon, please.”
Minghao looked between them, then nodded decisively. “I’ll make the call, see when they can fit us in.”
He hurried away, leaving Jeonghan alone with Seungcheol.
Worried that the alpha was angry, Jeonghan hesitated in the doorway. The alpha seemed to sense his fear. He smiled and opened his arms. Jeonghan pushed into his embrace, sighing as Seungcheol held him close.
“You’ll come with us, won’t you?”
Seungcheol huffed out a breath.
“Where you go, I go.” His arms eased lower, around Jeonghan’s waist, and he rocked them gently, almost like they were dancing.
“If nine hours in the car is too much for you, we’ll split it over a few days, find somewhere to stay overnight. Come on, you haven’t had lunch yet.”
“I’ll make it,” Jeonghan offered, trying to fight the tiredness that kept threatening to swamp him.
“No, you won’t. You’re exhausted. You can sit and cuddle the kittens while I cook.”
Jeonghan couldn’t help smiling. “That sounds nice.”
Moss and Spot were in a playful mood, and Jeonghan teased them with some string, watching them chase it around the floor.
“What about apple juice?” he asked idly, an idea springing to mind out of nowhere.
“What about it?”
“If we’re making cider, couldn’t we make it too? It’d be organic. They charge a lot for that at the grocery store, don’t they?”
Seungcheol turned to stare at him, and Jeonghan flushed under the weight of his gaze. Had he said something silly?
Before he could ask, Junhui stomped inside.
“I’m starved, what’s for lunch?”
“Grilled cheese and tomato,” Seungcheol said, still staring at Jeonghan.
Junhui looked between them. “What did I miss?”
“Your brother just had an excellent business idea.”
