Forged. All friendships are forged.
Based on the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the word forge has two meanings.
The first meaning pertains to things being "formed by pressing or hammering with or without heat especially, made into a desired shape by heating and hammering - for example, forged blades." The second one is a nastier explanation wherein forge means to make something "falsely, especially with intent to deceive - for example, forged signatures.
Either way, friendships are always forged. Some friendships were worth having, while some were filled with regrets. Both, however, will always provide lessons meant to be unlearned.
Friendship is also like love. It is a choice. We choose who we allow to enter our lives and who stays in our lives. Yet, like love, friendship should be forged by continually shaping it and guiding it toward the ideal relationship we want.
Friendship stops being like love when we stop to choose to do what is right and hurt the other person because of our agenda. That's when the different meaning of forge comes in.
Whatever the case, we all start with a blank slate. Whether or not it will become a friendship worth keeping is up to us. Sometimes, it's puzzling when life draws people you wouldn't believe you would be friends with in your lifetime, yet here you are, your best friends with them.
That's how my friendship with him started. It was unexpected. And just like one of the lead characters of this story, I'm sure he didn't expect to be friends with me. He is the Dolph the Dolphin of my life, he meant the world to me. It was a beautiful friendship, until I ruined it all.
As I try to hold to the remnants of that fleeting feeling while typing this story, I start my tale with an unsuspecting, young, and heroic dolphin who ventured into the sea after a raging storm where he found a floating egg, lost and alone.
