"Friends are people who really know you and still like you anyway" - Greg TamblynWere the pogues and our mission this summer is to have a good time, all the time.
"That's what, a three story fall to the deck?" a voice calls from the said deck of a massive house in construction. "I give you about a one-in-three chance of survival." he speaks again.
"Hm, should i do it?" another voice calls out this time the voice came from the roof, where a teenage boy stood balancing looking down at his friend.
"Yeah jump, i'll shoot you down." the voice from the deck calls out in a unserious voice.
"You'll shoot me?" the boy on the roof says half laughing while pointing finger guns down at his company on the deck.
In the midst of this interaction a lighter but more annoyed voice calls out from inside of the building, "There gonna have Japanese toilets with towel warmers."
The finally pair of this group speak up in unison as if it was planned, "Of course they will Kie"
Now who are all these voices in conversation well they are the pogues, a strangely paired group of teens just trying to get through a life. However, life will never seem as tough with good friends to get you through it.
Another boy pipes up with more concern over his beer than his friend, "Don't spill that beer John B, i am not giving you another one."
"You gave him a beer and won't give me one? Unbelievable." a different girls voice speaks up
"You see Els our friend John B here said the magic word, you did not" the same boy says in a sing song voice.
"I am pleased to say you are the biggest pain in my ass JJ Maybank" the girl fires back a big enunciation on the 'pleased'.
Amongst the pairs squabbling sounds a loud crash interrupts along with the voice of the rooftop boy "Oh shit".
"Of course you did" the annoyed boy mutters looking down at the fallen beer can on the deck.
"Hey guys, security is here"
"Let's roll"
"Come on Els i'll race you down"
With that the group of teens begin to speed through the house, one being caught in the grasp of a short, stubby security guard. "Not much of a hugger man" a boy laughs shoving him off.
They successfully get out and all pile into a beaten, old volkswagen van that the group call Twinkie. The rogue of the group tells the boy in the drivers seat to slow down as he hangs himself out the door dangling a beer can out the window at the running security guard. "Come on Gary, you're so close".
"You're gonna give him a heart attack" a girl speaks. With that he throws the can to Gary laughing as he gets back into the van.
"Oh come on, that sort of initiative is begging to be punished" the boy smiles.
I completely forgot you're probably wondering who are these teens, well let me tell you there the pogues. They are driving through Outerbanks, paradise on earth. It's the kind of place where you either have two jobs or two houses, two tribes, one island.
This is Figure 8, the rich side of the island. Home of the Kooks, so guess where they don't live.
And this, this is the south side or the cut. Home of the working class, who make a living bussing tables, washing yachts, running charters. The natural habitat, you guessed it the pogues. That's them. Pogues, pogies, the throwaway fish, the lowest member of the food chain. Now, the downside of pogue life is that there ignored and neglected. But the upside of pogue life? They're ignored and neglected which means they do whatever they want whenever they want.
Now to introduce you to the crew. That's JJ, John B's best friend since the third grade. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living of the water. Best surfer John B knows, he wouldn't like it if i told you that. Mild kleptomaniac and future tax cheat. He has the biggest thing for Els but his ego is way too big to even see it. Don't mention you heard that from me either.
Oh and that's Kiara, or Kie as they call her. When not saving turtles or listening to Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with them. I couldn't tell you why, she's a rich kid. Foot in both worlds. Her family own The Wreck, this Outer Banks institution. Total cash cow with tourists. You know, i don't think her parents are too keen on the pogues.
And that's Pope, the brains of the operation, finalist for the Lucas T. Vanderhorst Merit Scholarhship. The smartest person the group know. Little bit of a weirdo. His father's this legendary character, Heyward. Anything you wanted on the island Heyward could get for you. Now i'm not sure Heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn't matter he was a pogue just like the rest of them.
Thats John Booker Routeledge. He lives in an old fish shack on the marsh. The Châteu, as his dad used to call it. His dad disappeared at sea nine months ago, looking for a shipwreck. Who disappears at sea these days? His mom split when he was 3, lives in Colorado or something. John B left under legal guardianship of an Uncle T. While his uncle is off in Mississippi, building houses it's just him right now on his own, hanging out with his friends.
Finally, the centre of the group, the one and only Ellie Williams, known as El or Els. She's John B's best friend. Known on both sides of the island as the 'pogue princess'. Pretty niche right? Reckless, troublesome, shitty family, known by practically every cop in the Outer Banks, she ticks pretty much every box of being a pogue. Yes she is pretty careless and has a mouth on her but there's nothing she wouldn't do for her friends. To be honest they all kind of have a thing for her. Especially JJ. I don't think you could name a guy on this island who didn't have a thing for her, even Rafe Cameron. The pogues don't know that much yet. You'll hear a lot more about him later. Her and JJ have this flirty banter thing going on, if their egos weren't so big they'd be together by now.
But for now the group is happy the way the are. Young, dumb, broke, high school kids.
Well that's enough from me i'll leave you to enjoy their story, i promise you it's worth it.
A/N - Hi guys i really like the whole me narrating it for you let me know what you think??????
