Vanessa groaned as her alarm blared, slicing through the fog of her hangover. Her head pounded in time with the beeping, and for a moment, she considered ignoring it altogether, but then she remembered her appointment at the doctor's office. Cursing under her breath, she swung her legs out of bed, nearly tripping over her shoes from last night.

The night was a blur of loud music, flashing lights, and... Rafe.

Her heart skipped a beat as she recalled their near-kiss in the bathroom, the way his lips had brushed against hers before Daniel barged in. And then later, in the car, how she'd confessed about her heartbreak. She winced at the memory, praying Rafe would just forget it happened.

But knowing him, he wouldn't.

She peeled herself out of bed and stumbled into the bathroom. The hot water of the shower helped, easing some of the tension in her muscles and slightly dulling the ache in her head. She shouldn't have drunk so much, especially while taking her medication. The doctor had specifically warned her about mixing alcohol with her pills, but she had ignored him. What could happen, right?

After the shower, she wrapped herself in a towel, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her skin looked paler than usual. She sighed and started to get ready, pulling on a pair of jeans and a simple white tank top.

The last thing she wanted was to deal with Rafe today, but he had promised to take her to the doctor, and she didn't feel like driving herself in her current state.

Downstairs, she made herself a cup of coffee, the bitter smell helping to clear her head a little. As she was taking her first sip, she heard footsteps behind her. Turning around, she saw Rafe emerge from the office, already dressed and looking far more put together than she felt.

"Morning," he said, his voice casual but a little too careful.

"Morning," Vanessa replied, trying to act like nothing was off. She sipped her coffee, hoping the caffeine would speed up her recovery.

"You ready for your check-up?" Rafe asked, leaning against the counter, his eyes studying her.

Vanessa avoided his gaze, nodding. "Yeah, just need to finish my coffee."

Rafe gave a small nod, but she could feel the unspoken tension between them. She couldn't stop thinking about last night and hoped that maybe, just maybe, he'd forgotten. But from the way he kept looking at her, she knew he hadn't.

They left the house in silence, the drive to the doctor's office feeling longer than usual. Rafe kept his focus on the road, but Vanessa could see the way his hands gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. She wanted to say something, anything, to break the awkwardness, but the words just wouldn't come.

When they arrived at the doctor's office, Vanessa was relieved to finally have a reason to get away from Rafe for a bit. He stayed in the waiting room while she met with her doctor, a middle-aged man with kind eyes but a no-nonsense demeanor.
