"stop leaning into me!" eleanor pushed into her older brother, "you're squashing me, you big fatty!"

"you weigh more than me," he argues back, shoving her aswell. "and it's not me, blame dad! he's driving the truck."

"y'know," eugene says in his monotone voice, speaking to the adults. "i really don't appreciate you sticking me in the back with the children."

"stop bickering." abraham complains. "you guys do my nuttin'"

eleanor pressed her red hair up against the dusty window, trying to peer out of it. the thick forest filled the sides of the roads, looking like the last lively thing on earth. maybe all the people were dead but the earth didn't give up that easily, and that gave her some hope.

they'd been travelling for days trying to get eugene to washington because apparently he had a cure for the plagued, he was kind of a nerd. never the less, eleanor still considered him as her family. abraham was her dad, rosita was sort of like a mom, eugene and isaac were her annoying big brothers.

she hoped they would get to washington soon because she didn't like killing people anymore. isaac said that they weren't people, just another predator on the earth. but in her eyes, she still saw them as people.

once she was scavenging for supplies and she found herself looking near a dead plagued guy, checking his pockets. he had a wallet with his drivers license, a picture of what she assumed was his family, and 4 dollars and 83 cents.

that changed her perspective a lot because he was a person too, but his life has been stolen and then he was forced to roam the earth forever. eating people's brains.

"hey, dad," isaac pointed through the windshield, "look, it's people."

abraham looked over at rosita, smirking at her. he slows the car down as the people outside finish killing the dead. the man looks back at his children, staring at them firmly. "stay in the car, don't get out unless i say the safe word. okay?"

"yes sir."

"yes, dad."

the three adults hop out of the car as the woman started yelling at them loudly. they walk to in front of the lady.

"you got a damn mouth on you, you know that?" abraham said, looking around the scene. she doesn't reply. "what else you got?"

they were driving along the road with their new companions, or hostagez as isaac said, in the back of the army truck. the plagued started to crawl up the back of the truck, making eleanor whip her head around.

"daddy!" she yells as the woman stands up, "she's got a rifle!"

he immediately opens the car door, "do not fire that weapon!" the man climbs down, laughing when the dead started walking up to him. "what do we have here?"

eleanor pushed her eyes shut as her dad stabbed them all in the head, trying to block out the sound around her. she didn't want to listen anymore.

"hey! hey! stop the truck!" the boy in the back yelled, hitting on the glass. eleanor rolled her eyes, looking over at her brother who had his middle finger stuck up to the window.

they both started hitting the back and screaming, cracking the glass behind eleanor's head. maybe he hadn't realised he was hitting the glass between behind a child's head.

"dad, just stop the truck already!" isaac yelled, checking his sister's head for any injuries.

they both turned around and watched what was going on outside of the truck, not being able to hear what they are saying.

"what'd he say?" isaac turned to his sister, who furrowed her eyebrows at him. "if you can't hear, neither can i numbnuts!"

they all begin to walk further down the road, causing the kids to worry. hurriedly, they both hop down out of the truck and run up to their dad.

"dad!" isaac called out, "dad, where are you going?"

the young boys eyes widen as the asian boy punches his dad across the face, pushing him to the floor.

"what the fuck!" eleanor yelled as she walked over to her dad.

"she's alive, and i'm gonna find her." the boy began to walk away, but abraham charged at him.

isaac wrapped his arm around his sister's head, pulling her into his chest. violent yells filled the air, surrounding the girl.

then, the yells stopped. then the gunshots started. isaac shoved eleanor to the ground, yelling at her to stay there while he went and helped.

her ears began to ring and her eyes began to cry as she watched her father's shirt turn from beige to dark crismon.

"we were running a convoy in one of these," abraham explained, "coming up a dune, there's this camel, looks like it's about to puke. probably because... shitbird's packed about four pounds of c4 up it's ass."

they all looked around in boredom as he continues talking, "we were within 20 feet of that blast that sent that animals jump half a klick into the desert and we drove home."

"get to your point, dad." isaac ruffled his buzzcut, stabbing a stick into the dirt. "we don't want to hear your story."

he sighed loudly, "tell me how in the holy hell did you possibly kill this truck?"

eugene looked at the redhead with guilt, "a fully amped-up state and an ignorance of rapid-firing weapons."

eleanor spots a small piece of white paper scattered on the floor, so she picked it up and looked at it. it was a picture of a pretty woman with short brown hair, and a really beautiful smile. "is this yours?" she holds it up to the boy, who she had discovered was called glenn.

he looks at it before taking it from her, "yeah, thanks." glenn walks over to abraham, "sorry about your ride." he hands him a gun, "hope you guys make it to washington."

they all watch as he walks away, followed closely by his other friend. rosita sighs, following after them. "well, what the hell else are we meant to do?"

"go to washington!" abraham yelled after her, "fix the whole damn world!"

eugene walks up next to him, "that way's clear. who knows what's north. we'll find another vehicle. we'll go with them until we do. trust me, i'm smarter than you."

"i mean, i quite liked sitting in the truck instead of walking but okay." eleanor complained, getting up from where she was sat.

and then they set off. they each carried a bag or two and a weapon incase of emergencies, swinging them over their shoulder.

eleanor walked parallel to tara, scraping her pink sneakers along the uneven concrete. she hated walking.

"sorry if we ruined your road trip." tara said, turning to the young girl. "how long you been on the road for?"

the redhead shook her head, "since the beginning. i don't know how long it's been, though. i lost track a while ago."

"oh, right." she chuckled, "well, my calculations tell me that it's been nearly 18 months."

"do you know the month?" eleanor asked, "need to know if daddy cheated me out of a birthday." she finishes sarcastically.

"january."

she gasps loudly, "he said my birthday was next month! my birthday is october!"
