LIAR-013

"Why did you help me?" Laurent suddenly asked, as they sat on one of the garden boxes.

"Because you remind me of my brother," Cassie replied, looking at him.

The boy looked at her. "You have a brother? I thought you were an only child."

The teenager chucked, shaking her head. "His name is Carl, and he's a bit older than you. I have three siblings. Three brothers---well, two but my mom is pregnant, and I want a brother."

"I always wanted siblings." Laurent fumbled with his jacket sleeves. "But my mother is with the angels."

"Do you want to know something?" He nodded. "My brother, he's with the angles too."

"He is? Maybe he's with my mother." He said, tilting his head back and looked up at the sky. "My mother died when I was born. How did your brother die?"

Cassie wetted her lips, wrapping her arms around herself. "He was bitten by saving the mother of my niece."

"Daryl is a grandfather?" Laurent looked back at her in surprise. "He does not look like he could be one."

"Well, he is in his 50s. Early 50s. So, he is the age to be a grandfather." She chuckled, nudging the boy. "He's an old fart."

"Oui," The boy laughed. "An old fart."

"Cassie!" The voice of Hershel called out for her, causing the pair to look over to the older teenagers.

"I'll be right back, Laurent. Stay here," The girl said before standing up and gusted off the dirt from her pant. She walked over to Hershel, who was smiling at her. "Hey, Hersh. What's up?"

"Where's your dad?" He asked, having just woken up a little bit ago.

Cassie watched the boy lean against the wall of the building with his arms crossed over his chest. Something flared up in her, her cheeks warm with color causing her to look down to the ground. "He went with Lou to the castle."

"You didn't go with him?" Hershel questioned, knowing the girl would normally go with man.

"Nah, I wanted to stay with Laur...What the hell?!

The boy pushed off the wall, looking at the girl in concern. "What? What's wrong?"

"Laurent...he was just there..." Cassie trailed off, looking at where the boy just was and saw that he was missing. "He's--he's not there anymore."
