"So, why are you guys here?" she demanded, staring at all the humans in advance.

Celeste was taken aback by the witch's tone. "Huh?"

"Humans never just enter our realm without cause. Why are you here?"

"To save the world!" announced Fleur excitedly.

"To stop the forces of Ira from making it into our world," Ophelia said harshly.

"To prove myself," sighed Tyrone, slumping.

"To have an adventure," Celeste and Rowan admitted in union. They each gave each other a sideways glance.

"Huh. Different answers," Macy noted.

"And?" demanded Ophelia defensively.

"Merely an observation," the witch assured them. "So, you've heard of Aester already?"

The humans around the log table nodded.

"Do you know how to defeat him?"
"Plunge a sword through his throat?" tried Rowan. Everyone looked at him incredulously.

"You can't," groaned Gwen.

Everyone looked at her incredulously.

"I mean, you can, but it won't kill him," Gwen rephrased.

"Then what can?" wondered Fleur dreamily.

Macy stood up. "That, my dear, is a very good question. Do you by chance have a book in your bag?"

"Uh–"

"Get it, then."

The five humans scampered to their bags and each pulled out a thick, black, leather book.

"What are they about?" Macy enquired.

"Evil mages," said Celeste.

"Evil sirens," said Fleur

"Evil vampires," said Rowan

"Evil werewolves," said Ophelia.

"Evil elves," said Tyrone.

"Oh, elves are evil," said Hunter. "Aester just hated that they were more powerful than him. He didn't want anything to be more powerful than him." he paused. "Elves were also the number one human haters. Aester would have hated that."

"They're extinct now, though," Gwen inserted. After a moment, she quietly added; "Only good that's ever come out of one of Aester's plots."

"Those books came to you for a reason... not like magic, of course, but they'd have to stumble into your hands for some reason." Hunter pondered for a moment. "You guys... must have been chosen."

"So we're chosen heroes?" Rowan grinned.

Macy and Hunter both offered an enthusiastic "yes!" at the same time Gwen gave a horrified "no!"

"So who is Aester?" Celeste cut through.

Macy, Gwen and Hunter all turned to leer at Celeste, eyes wide.

"No? Don't ask? Is this a 'we don't speak of him' type villain?"

Gwen just sat there, gaping at Celeste from across the table, and Hunter gave her a look that promptly said Yes, Celeste, yes he is.

"Uh, Macy, why exactly can't you kill him with a sword? Is it some kind of spell?" Tyrone asked anxiously.
