THE BONEYARD wasn't Daisy's favorite place in the world, but since her father kicked her out of the house for the day, she had nothing better to do.
Daisy Jo Mendoza, or DJ, to those who gave a fuck, wasn't born and raised in North Carolina but moved to the OBX when she turned six.
Emilio and Fernanda Mendoza traveled a lot. Both were adventurous in their own right, but they found a balance that Daisy couldn't stand.
Daisy was born in Florida in 2003, lived there until she was two, and then moved with her family to South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Iowa, the list goes on and on.
Before North Carolina, they lived in California. They weren't there long, and that didn't surprise Daisy, but the quick haste and succession in which it happened stuck with Daisy to this day.

She would never forget that night. She grew to become fidgety and hated loud sounds, but her parents did not take notice.
They lived in a small bungalow in the OBX. Her father, Emilio, claimed that it was safer. They wouldn't be seen, not many people drove past, and they could keep to themselves. They lived in The Cut, which was considered the "lower class" part of Kildare.
In Kildare, you either worked or you were a Kook. If you lived in The Cut, everyone worked. Parents, kids, grandparents. You couldn't find a single person in The Cut who didn't work... except for Daisy.
That, for the most part, is why she wasn't considered a Pogue by their standards. Again, she wasn't considered a Kook because she lived in The Cut.
Daisy Mendoza was simply... Daisy.
Her father taught her how to fish, how to survive on her own in case something happened, and how to boil salt water from the sea. Emilio Mendoza may have been a bad guy, but he was going to make sure that Daisy was able to survive on her own in case something happened.
