The sun had barely risen, casting soft golden light across the rooftops as Zade and Serena ran through the narrow streets. Despite the danger pressing in around them, there was something undeniably electric between them, something that neither could deny any longer.
They reached the edge of the city, their breaths ragged and their hearts pounding in unison. Zade slowed, turning to Serena, his eyes dark with worry but also burning with an intensity she had never seen before.
“We need to hide, at least for a while,” Zade said, his voice barely above a whisper. His gaze flicked over her, checking for any signs of injury. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she replied, breathless but exhilarated by their escape. Her heart raced, not just from the chase but from the way Zade looked at her, as though she was the only thing in the world that mattered.
They slipped into a nearby abandoned building, the air thick with dust and silence. Inside, the world felt a little less hostile, as if they were suspended in time, far away from the chaos that hunted them. Zade closed the door behind them and leaned against the wall, his chest rising and falling with each breath.
Serena took a step closer to him, her hand brushing against his arm. “Zade…” she began, her voice soft but filled with emotion. “I don’t care what Dr. Eliasson said. You’re not a machine to me. You’re not a weapon. You’re everything.”
Zade’s eyes softened as he looked at her, and for a moment, the weight of his past seemed to lift, leaving only the two of them in the quiet space. “You don’t understand,” he said, his voice strained. “I’m dangerous. What if what he said is true? What if everything I feel… everything between us… is just something I was programmed to believe?”
Serena shook her head, stepping even closer until their bodies were inches apart. “No,” she whispered fiercely. “I know what we have is real. I feel it every time you look at me, every time you touch me. No one can fake that. Not even you.”
She reached up, cupping his face in her hands, forcing him to meet her gaze. “You’re not a machine, Zade. You’re the person I love.”
The words hung in the air between them, a confession that neither of them had been ready to say until now. Zade’s breath hitched as her words sank in, and he felt a surge of emotion so powerful it nearly overwhelmed him.
“Serena…” he murmured, his voice raw with emotion. He hesitated for a moment, then, unable to hold back any longer, he pulled her into his arms, crashing his lips against hers.
The kiss was fierce, filled with all the longing, fear, and love they had held back for too long. It was as though the world around them dissolved, leaving only the heat between them, the taste of their desperation, and the feel of their hearts beating wildly in sync. Zade’s hands slipped around her waist, pulling her closer, as if he couldn’t bear to be apart from her for even a second longer.
Serena melted into him, her hands tangling in his hair as the kiss deepened, full of unspoken promises and a passion that neither of them had known existed. Every touch felt electric, every brush of his lips against hers igniting something inside her that had been dormant for so long.
Zade broke the kiss just long enough to rest his forehead against hers, his breath shaky as he spoke. “I’ve never felt anything like this,” he admitted, his voice low and rough. “You’re the only thing that makes me feel alive, Serena.”
Her heart swelled at his words, and she pressed a soft kiss to his lips, her hands tracing the lines of his face as if memorizing every detail. “You make me feel the same way,” she whispered, her voice full of love. “We’re in this together. No matter what happens next, I’m not letting you go.”
Zade’s arms tightened around her, and for a moment, they simply held each other, their breaths mingling, their hearts beating as one. It was as if the world outside didn’t matter anymore, as if nothing could touch them here in this quiet, stolen moment.
But the reality of their situation loomed over them, and Zade’s expression darkened as he pulled away slightly, his hand still cupping her face. “Serena, I don’t want you to get hurt because of me. The people after us… they won’t stop.”
“Neither will I,” she replied, her voice unwavering. “I’m not afraid. Not as long as I have you.”
Zade looked at her for a long moment, as if trying to memorize her face, the way her eyes sparkled with determination, the way her lips curved into a soft, loving smile. “I don’t deserve you,” he whispered, brushing his thumb over her cheek. “But I’m never letting you go.”
Before she could respond, Zade kissed her again, slower this time, savoring every second. The kiss was a promise—of love, of loyalty, of a future that might be uncertain, but one they would face together.
When they finally pulled apart, Serena’s heart was pounding in her chest, her mind spinning with everything that had happened. But despite the danger, despite the uncertainty, she had never felt more certain about anything in her life.
“Come on,” Zade said softly, his hand still entwined with hers. “We need to move.”
She nodded, but as they stepped toward the door, she paused, turning back to look at him. “Zade?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
Zade smiled, a real, genuine smile that made her heart flutter. “I love you too, Serena.”
With that, they stepped back into the light, hand in hand, ready to face whatever came next. The world outside was full of danger, but together, they were unstoppable.
