The room felt heavier after Ares left, his ominous words echoing in both their minds. Zade paced back and forth, his jaw clenched in frustration. Every muscle in his body was tense, and his mind raced with the implications of what Ares had said.Serena sat on the bed, watching him, her own thoughts swirling in chaos. She tried to push down the fear rising in her chest, focusing instead on Zade—on his sharp movements, the way he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders.
“Zade, talk to me,” she said softly, standing up and walking over to him. Her voice was calm, even though inside, she was anything but.
Zade stopped pacing and turned to face her, his expression conflicted. “I don’t know what to think, Serena,” he admitted, running a hand through his hair. “What if Ares is telling the truth? What if there’s something bigger than Project Nexus, and we’re caught right in the middle of it?”
Serena stepped closer, placing a gentle hand on his arm. “We’ll figure it out, together. We’ve made it this far. Whatever’s coming, we’ll face it.”
Zade looked down at her, his heart swelling with both love and fear. He had always been the one to protect her, but now, it felt like the world was closing in on them from all sides. The uncertainty was suffocating, but Serena’s steady presence kept him grounded.
He sighed, taking her hand in his. “I just don’t want to lose you. Not to Nexus, not to anything.”
Serena smiled softly, her fingers lacing with his. “You won’t lose me, Zade. I’m right here. Always.”
They stood like that for a moment, the silence between them filled with unspoken words. Zade felt his heart calm just being near her, but there was still a gnawing feeling in his gut that told him they weren’t out of danger yet. Not even close.
Suddenly, a thought hit Serena, and she looked up at Zade with wide eyes. “What if Ares is right, though? What if we’re part of something even bigger than we realize?”
Zade frowned, his mind racing as he considered her words. “You mean… there’s more to Project Nexus than just me?”
Serena nodded, her mind already working through the possibilities. “Think about it. Dr. Eliasson was desperate to keep us apart. And now Ares shows up, telling us we’re at the center of some kind of war. What if Nexus was just the beginning?”
Zade’s eyes darkened as the pieces began to fall into place. “If that’s true, then we need to figure out what we’re really up against.”
Serena squeezed his hand, her eyes full of determination. “We need answers. And we’re not going to get them by hiding here.”
Zade nodded, his mind clearing with a new sense of purpose. “You’re right. We need to go back. Find Dr. Eliasson, force him to tell us the truth.”
Serena’s heart pounded at the thought of returning to Nexus. It was dangerous, but she knew they had no other choice. They needed to confront the man who had started all of this, the man who had created Zade, and find out what he was really after.
But before they could act, the faint sound of footsteps echoed outside the door.
Zade’s eyes snapped to the noise, his body instantly going on high alert. He motioned for Serena to stay quiet as he moved toward the window, peeking out through the thin curtains.
There were figures moving in the shadows—several of them, their movements coordinated and precise.
“They found us,” Zade whispered, his heart pounding.
Serena’s blood ran cold. “What do we do?”
Zade turned back to her, his expression hard. “We fight.”
Without hesitation, he moved toward the door, locking it securely. Serena grabbed a small knife from the kitchen counter, her hands trembling slightly, but her resolve firm. They had fought before, but this time it felt different. This time, the enemy was closing in faster, and the stakes were higher than ever.
Zade took a deep breath, his mind running through every scenario, every possible escape. But no matter how hard he tried to stay calm, the thought of Serena getting hurt sent a wave of panic through him.
“I won’t let them take you,” he said fiercely, his eyes locking onto hers. “No matter what.”
Serena nodded, her heart swelling with love and fear. “We’re in this together, remember? I won’t leave you.”
The door rattled as the intruders tried to force it open. Zade positioned himself in front of Serena, ready to fight whoever came through.
And then, with a deafening crash, the door burst open.
The men who entered were clad in black, their faces hidden behind masks. They moved quickly, their weapons drawn as they stormed the room.
Zade acted on instinct, launching himself at the nearest attacker with a ferocity Serena had never seen before. The room erupted into chaos as Zade fought off the intruders, his movements sharp and precise, his strength overwhelming.
Serena held her ground, her heart pounding in her chest as she defended herself against the attackers. She wasn’t as strong as Zade, but she was quick, using her agility to dodge and counter every strike.
Despite the odds, they fought side by side, a seamless unit in the midst of the chaos. But just as it seemed they might hold their ground, one of the attackers broke through their defenses, grabbing Serena and pulling her away from Zade.
“Serena!” Zade shouted, his voice filled with terror as he fought to reach her.
But before he could get to her, one of the masked men pressed a syringe to Serena’s neck, injecting her with something before Zade could stop him.
Serena’s body went limp in the man’s arms, her eyes fluttering as the drug took effect.
“No!” Zade roared, his heart shattering as he watched her fall unconscious.
In a blur of movement, Zade took down the last of the attackers, his body fueled by rage and fear. He rushed to Serena’s side, cradling her limp form in his arms.
“Serena, please, wake up,” he begged, his voice breaking as he held her close.
But she didn’t stir.
Zade’s mind raced, his heart pounding in his chest as he tried to figure out what they had injected her with. He had to save her. He couldn’t lose her now, not after everything they had been through.
As he sat there, holding her, the sound of sirens in the distance grew louder. The authorities were closing in, but Zade didn’t care. All that mattered was Serena.
“I’ll get you back,” he whispered, his voice full of desperation. “I promise.”
