The adrenaline from their narrow escape pumped through Zade’s veins as they sprinted through the winding corridors of the facility. Heart pounding, he could hear the guards shouting behind them, their footsteps echoing ominously.

“Which way?” Serena gasped, glancing back, her face flushed with a mix of fear and excitement.

“Left! We’ll head for the maintenance exit!” Zade shouted, tugging her along. They turned sharply, the dim lights flickering above them as they raced down the corridor.

As they reached a small door marked with a faded sign that read "Maintenance," Zade paused, throwing it open and ushering Serena through. They tumbled into a dark, cramped space filled with machinery and old equipment. Zade quickly closed the door behind them, pressing his back against it to catch his breath.

“Are we safe?” Serena whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

“For now,” Zade replied, peering through a small window in the door. The sounds of chaos outside filled the air, but they seemed distant. He turned to face her, heart racing, and the reality of their situation hit him hard. “We did it, Serena. We shut it down.”

A relieved smile broke across her face, illuminating the dimness of the room. “I can’t believe we actually did it! But…” Her expression darkened as she looked around, concern etched in her features. “What now?”

Zade stepped closer, their bodies nearly touching in the tight space. “We need to get out of here and find the others. Malik is probably still trying to rally the resistance outside.”

Serena nodded, but Zade could see the worry in her eyes. “You’re worried about the guards,” he said, his voice low. “I’ll protect you, no matter what.”

“I know,” she replied softly, searching his gaze. “But what if they find us? What if this isn’t over?”

Before he could answer, the door rattled, and their heads whipped toward it. Zade’s heart raced, but he forced himself to remain calm. “Stay quiet,” he whispered.

They held their breath, listening as voices approached. The guards were searching the nearby rooms, their footsteps drawing closer. Zade’s mind raced with possibilities, desperate to think of a way out.

“We have to get out of here,” he said urgently, scanning the dim room for another exit. His eyes landed on a vent above them. “Can you climb?”

“Yeah, I think so,” Serena replied, determination flashing in her eyes.

“Okay, I’ll boost you up,” he instructed, crouching down. Serena stepped onto his shoulders, and he felt the weight of her trust as he steadied her. She reached for the vent, fingers grasping the edges as she hoisted herself up.

“Go, go!” Zade urged softly, keeping his eyes on the door.

With a final push, Serena disappeared into the vent, and Zade felt a rush of relief. He quickly followed, scrambling up to the opening just as the door burst open, revealing two guards. Zade barely made it inside the vent, heart pounding as he pressed himself against the metal, listening to the guards enter the room.

“Where did they go?” one guard barked, frustration in his voice.

“Check the vents!” the other ordered.

Zade held his breath, praying they wouldn’t find them. He glanced at Serena, who was wide-eyed, fear mixing with exhilaration. He reached out, squeezing her hand to reassure her.

After what felt like an eternity, the guards finally left, and Zade exhaled slowly. “We’re okay,” he whispered, though his heart was still racing.
