It wasn't long before Jo, Sirius, James and Peter had the mandrake leave nestled atop their molars on the eve of the full moon. Sirius was tasked with making sure Peter doesn't swallow his, much to his dismay, though there'd be no one better than Sirius for the job. He was quicker with a spell than any of them, mind moving a mile a minute, you wouldn't know it by looking at Sirius - a cocky, wealthy, boy with a pretty face - but he was aggravatingly intelligent, Peter would not perish under his watch.
Jo had been dragged off by Lily for some revision in the Library, insisting that she needn't worry about Remus when all three boys were watching out for and waiting for him in front of the whomping willow, but that only concerned Jo more, they could be too reckless around him. The rays of the full moon shone through the Library windows, highlighting the worry etched across her face.
In front of the willow, Sirius and Peter were emerged in a game of exploding snap, James picking at his nails, wand strewn somewhere in the grass. Every so often they'd check the position of the woods, flinch at a particularly loud howl or wail of pain, eyeing the burrow by the tree trunk and debating whether it possible that Remus could scramble out of it in his werewolf form.
James' invisibility cloak were chucked nearby, in the case that they'd need to huddle away from Madam Pomfrey and her sporadic trips to check on Remus. He rubbed his eyes, lanterns within the school were beginning to extinguish, a deep midnight stretched across the sky. The pearly white globe hidden behind the occasional cloud, enveloping the boys in bouts of darkness.
Another howl came from the tunnel, James checks his watch, three o'clock. "Man, I can't wait till we get this over and done with." He sighs deeply, rubbing his eyes.
"Me 'n Peter nicked the other ingredients from Slughorn last week, I put the phials on our window sill, leave it up to us to have the one dorm that the moon shines brightest on." Sirius snorts, inching away from another explosion from the cards, "almost got caught by Snivellus though - pathetic shit."
James groaned, "Snape? Leave it up to him to spoil our fun - how'd you get past his greasy arse?"
"Stinging jinx, picked it up in a book Professor Loxias recommended - said I'm naturally gifted." Sirius muses, leaning on his hands, "you know I'd reckon he's the first decent Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher we've had in a while, think Dumbledore'll manage to keep him on next year?"
Peter grunts, clutching his hand in pain from the playing cards, "I doubt it." Sirius and James look at him, eyebrows raised, "what? they don't last long, never have, never will, so there's no point in getting attached."
"S'pose so, though if we could get any professor to stay, I'd ask that Russian lady from our second year." James sucks in a breath, "remember her? Taught me my first hex, used it on Snivellus the next day."
"Ha! I remember that! Professor Zorlin was something else, she wasn't all that bad, nice to look at even though she had the tendency to waffle about vampires." Sirius laughed.
"Exactly my point." James said. "Though thinking about it, she really could've been one."
"Reckon Moony'll be alright?" Peter glanced at the whomping willow, "Jo isn't here - it's been awhile since she hasn't come to a full moon."
"The lady needs a break every once in a while, I told Lily to have some girly fun with her, though by the looks of it, I think Jo is going to be forced to study." Sirius shrugged, magicking away the cards. "Moony needs to understand that Jo isn't at his beck and call, let the girl relax for once."
"I reckon you're jealous." Peter says quickly.
"Jealous?" Sirius snaps.
"You know what, Peter I totally see it." James cocked his head, pointing accusingly at Sirius.
