"Mr. Jeon ?" Air says again.
"Huh?"
"We asked if you'd like to sit down."
"Oh. Right." Jungkook mentally kicks himself and wonders if he'll be able to manage more than one-syllable sentences today. Great first impression, you idiot, he thinks to himself.
"I believe we should discuss your contract," Namjoon begins, placing a manila folder on the desk. The phrase 'Personal Manager Contract' is printed on the tab.
"Have you heard of the band WINGS?"
Jungkook laughs, partially out of discomfort but also because the question is ridiculous. It's like asking Jungkook if he'd heard of the moon. WINGS is one of the most popular bands in Korean , and Taehyung (of whom Jungkook is hyper-aware that he's still in the room) has almost god-like idol status.
Truthfully, Jungkook thinks that WINGS produces mediocre music and it was Taehyung 's fans that propelled the group into stardom, but he would never say that out loud. As it is, Jungkook only smiles and nods in response.
"I'm afraid we misled you in the job posting," Namjoon explains. "The job in question is not as an administrative assistant in records. To be honest, I don't even know if that job exists. The reason we brought you here today is because Taehyung here is need of a personal manager," Taehyung scoffs from the corner of the room, "despite his arguments to the contrary."
"I manage the group as a whole," Air adds, "but Taehyung 's popularity far exceeds that of the rest of the band, and this has led to... certain issues. I'm sure you've seen the news."
Jungkook nods again. Taehyung 's image in the media swings like a pendulum between being a suave musician and an arrogant jerk who was mean to his fans. That image, combined with a few allegations of drunk behavior and assaulting reporters, keeps Taehyung almost constantly in the news.
"Because of this, we decided almost a year ago that Taehyung needed closer attention. He needs someone to look out for him personally."
"Let me be frank," Namjoon says, laying a hand on the contract folder. "You were not our first choice for this position."
Jungkook tries not to let the sting of that sentence show on his face. "I see."
"You have no previous experience in managerial work, handling celebrities, or dealing with confidential material. However, we have had problems with Taehyung 's previous managers."
"Let's not lie to the guy," says Air with a chuckle. She turns to Jungkook . "They all quit."
"Why?"
No one replies, but by the way Namjoon and Air look to Taehyung immediately with disapproving expressions, Jungkook can only guess.
"We're trying a new approach," Namjoon says, ignoring the question. "We want someone honest and hard-working, and we believe you have these qualities, which may compensate for your lack of experience. We would pay you five times the rate we offered for the assistantship."
Jungkook 's eyebrows fly upwards. Five times the previous rate? With that money, he could - "I'll take the job."
"Not so fast." Air taps the manila folder. "This job isn't as glamorous as you may think. It requires quick thinking, a calm demeanor, and constant energy. Unlike a conventional job, you would have very little time to yourself from now on, as you must always be available for Taehyung ."
Jungkook looks briefly at Taehyung in his peripheral. He still hasn't said anything. Jungkook tries to quickly weigh the pros and cons in his head, but his train of thought quickly derails into chaos: he can work long hours (he's young, after all), and he's sure he can handle Taehyung - he's probably only prickly on the outside, and not having a lot of time off would be a bummer but he really needs the money, and he has debts, and they're paying five times the rate, five times the rate -
