Scene 1: A Special Family Gathering
The Palmer residence had not hosted such a large family gathering in years. The long dining table was draped in a pristine white cloth, adorned with crystal vases holding freshly cut roses. The air was thick with the scent of roasted meats and freshly baked bread. Arthur and Victoria were nervous but eager as they prepared to share the big news with their family.
Arthur stood near the grand window, his hands clasped behind his back, watching as his brother Patrick, his wife Julianne, and their son Ben arrived. Caroline and her husband Lloyd were already seated, laughing quietly with Victoria.
Despite the years of tension between Arthur and Patrick, Arthur had insisted on inviting his brother. After all, family came first, and this was a momentous occasion.
Patrick: “Arthur, Victoria, thanks for inviting us.”
Arthur nodded at his brother, their greeting stiff but respectful.
Arthur: “Of course, Patrick. It’s been too long since we’ve had the family together. It’s time we put certain things behind us.”
Patrick looked skeptical but said nothing. The last time the family had all sat together was for Caroline’s wedding four years ago, and since then, they had drifted even further apart.
Once everyone had settled at the table, Arthur cleared his throat and raised his glass of wine, signaling for silence. All eyes turned to him.
Arthur: “I want to thank everyone for coming today. It’s been far too long since we’ve gathered like this, and I thought today was the perfect occasion to share some exciting news.”
Victoria smiled warmly, her eyes flickering to Theo, who was seated across from Ben, looking slightly uncomfortable.
Arthur: “Theo has decided to marry.”
There was a collective gasp around the table, especially from Julianne and Caroline, who exchanged glances of surprise.
Julianne: “Theo? You’re getting married?”
Caroline: “That’s wonderful! Who’s the lucky woman?”
Arthur smiled broadly, glancing at Theo before continuing.
Arthur: “Her name is Sam Beaumont-Rao. They met at the gala event a few months ago and have made the decision to marry.”
Julianne’s eyes widened in recognition of the Beaumont name, but she held her tongue. Caroline, on the other hand, clapped her hands together excitedly.
Caroline: “That’s amazing, Theo! Congratulations!”
Theo nodded politely, but his smile didn’t quite reach his eyes. Arthur continued, careful to omit the details of the business arrangement that lay at the core of the marriage.
Arthur: “We couldn’t be happier with Theo’s choice. The Beaumont-Rao family is well-respected, and we believe this union will bring great things for both families.”
As the family clapped and raised their glasses, Theo sat back in his chair, glancing at his mother, who gave him an encouraging smile. For a moment, he felt the weight of the charade, but he pushed it aside, knowing he had no choice but to play his part.

Scene 2: A Cigarette and an Apology
After lunch, the family dispersed to different parts of the estate. Theo found himself standing by the pool, lighting a cigarette and watching the rippling water. The midday sun reflected off the surface, casting a shimmering light across the patio. He exhaled slowly, trying to gather his thoughts.
