Four months have passed since Grayson and Miranda Gilbert died when their car went over Wickery Bridge with Elena in the back seat. Miranda's sister Jenna was given custody of Sophia, Jeremy, and Elena after the accident.
While Elena isolated herself from her siblings, Sophia did her best to be there for Jeremy during the loss of their parents, even though she herself was devastated, she made sure that Jeremy knew she was there for him too. While Jeremy smoked a joint every once in a while, he mostly got through it by talking with Sophia. Sophia and Jeremy were always close, but lately Sophia had become Jeremy's rock and Jeremy had become Sophia's.
Now it's the first day of a new school year. Jeremy is starting sophomore year and Elena and Sophia are starting junior year. Sophia wakes Jeremy up before walking downstairs.
"Morning, Aunt Jenna." Sophia says as she walks in the kitchen and to the coffee maker.
"Morning. Do you need anything? Toast. I can make toast." Jenna says as Sophia pours a cup of coffee of herself and Jeremy.
"It's all about the coffee, Aunt Jenna." Sophia says and Jeremy walks in, followed by Elena.
"Is there coffee?" Jeremy asks
"Yup. Here." Sophia walks over and hands him one of the mugs in her hand as Elena walks over to the coffee maker.
"Your first day of school and I'm totally unprepared. Lunch money?" Jenna asks, holding up money.
"I'm good." Elena says.
Jeremy takes the cash and hands half to Sophia.
"Always take money when asked if you need any, Elena. As long as it's not a loan anyway." Sophia says.
"Anything else? A number two pencil? What am I missing?" Jenna asks
"Don't you have a presentation today?" Jeremy asks
"I'm meeting with my thesis advisor at..." She trails off looking at her watch. "Now. Crap!"
"Then go." Sophia says
"We'll be fine." Elena adds and Jenna leaves. Elena then turns to her siblings. "You two okay?"
"Yeah." Sophia says
"Don't start." Jeremy says annoyed at the same time before walking out of the kitchen.
"Why is he like that with me?" Elena asks Sophia.
"You've been icing us out all summer, Elena. I get that you were in the car with our parents, but we all lost them. While I tried to help both you and Jeremy through it, you iced us out, wanting to deal with it on your own, so it was just Jeremy and I getting through it together. So you asking if he's okay, now, after 4 months of being iced out, bugs him." Sophia says and Elena sighs. "Are you sure you don't need a ride to school?"
"Bonnie is picking me up." Elena says
"Alright." Sophia says putting her empty mug in the sink before walking to the stairs. "Jeremy! Let's go!" Sophia calls up the stairs. Jeremy comes down with his and Sophia's backpacks. He hands Sophia hers before walking out the door towards Sophia's car."See you at school, Elena." Sophia says before following Jeremy.

Jeremy and Sophia walk up to the school.
"How much sleep did you get last night?" Sophia asks, noticing the bags under Jeremy's eyes.
"Not much. Tossing and turning all night. I didn't smoke anything." Jeremy says. He tends to tell Sophia when he is going to smoke. Sophia doesn't get onto him about it as long as it is just pot and he is doing it somewhere he is safe. Half the time she is with him when he is smoking, but she doesn't smoke like he does.
