CAUGHT IN THE MOMENT

Minjeong and Jimin had been best friends since before they could walk, growing up side by side in the same neighborhood, their bond solidified by years of shared experiences and laughter. From diapers to adulthood, they were practically inseparable, spending almost every waking moment together. They had always clicked—understanding each other in a way no one else could. They laughed at the same jokes, comforted each other in hard times, and spoke a language of glances and gestures that seemed natural to them.

To everyone around them, Minjeong and Jimin were more than just best friends. Aeri and Yizhuo, their closest friends, had always noticed how they seemed to be in their own little world—whether it was the way they leaned into each other, shared touches that lingered, or exchanged soft glances no one else could interpret. To outsiders, it often looked like they were a couple. But Minjeong and Jimin? They never noticed. To them, it was just how they were—comfortable, close, and happy.

One evening, the four of them were hanging out at Aeri’s place, sprawled across her living room with takeout boxes scattered around. The TV was playing in the background, but no one was really paying attention. Minjeong was lying on the floor with her head resting on Jimin’s lap, scrolling through her phone while Jimin absentmindedly ran her fingers through Minjeong’s hair.

“So, when are we heading to the beach next weekend?” Minjeong asked, her voice muffled as she looked up at Jimin.

Jimin glanced down, a soft smile tugging at her lips. “Saturday morning, probably. We should leave early to beat the traffic.”

Yizhuo, sitting cross-legged on the couch, raised an eyebrow. “You guys are way too synced up. It’s a little creepy, honestly.”

Minjeong laughed, still focused on her phone. “What are you talking about?”

Aeri, who was perched on the arm of the couch, smirked. “What Yizhuo’s trying to say is that you two act like you’ve been married for years. Always finishing each other’s sentences, doing this,” she waved a hand in their direction, “like it’s normal.”

Jimin blinked, looking genuinely confused. “What? We’re just friends.”

“Just friends,” Yizhuo echoed, her tone laced with teasing disbelief. “Right. Friends who can’t go five minutes without touching each other.”

Minjeong rolled her eyes, giving a dramatic sigh. “You guys always say this, but it’s not like that.”

Aeri exchanged a glance with Yizhuo, both clearly unconvinced. “Sure. Whatever you say.”

Jimin shrugged, brushing it off the way she always did when their friends teased them. To her, the closeness she shared with Minjeong was completely normal. Why wouldn’t she be comfortable with her best friend? They had known each other their whole lives, after all. It never struck her as odd that they gravitated toward each other, whether they were in a group setting or alone. It was just... them.

As the night went on, their friends kept throwing in little comments, trying to get a reaction, but Minjeong and Jimin barely noticed. When Minjeong absentmindedly leaned her head on Jimin’s shoulder as they watched a movie, Yizhuo shot Aeri a knowing look. When Jimin reached over to brush a stray hair from Minjeong’s face, Aeri smirked and whispered, “See what I mean?” But the two were oblivious, laughing at the screen and enjoying each other’s company like nothing was out of the ordinary.

The next morning, they all decided to meet up for brunch at their favorite café. Aeri and Yizhuo arrived first, taking a table near the window. Not long after, Minjeong and Jimin walked in together, side by side, as they always did.
