Chapter 24
Those heavy and scarce words had pushed the pinket into the spiral of silence and thought he knew all too well.
Ever since his lungs engulfed the wonders of a new chance at life – or this mysterious afterlife they had fallen unto – it became his duty to approach every single soul he could. Picking and poking at the minds of blurred enemy lines and dodgy loyalty.
At some point, during the war he could not sink his own blades through, the real enemies had risen, and some had been worse than others.
Pushing boundaries between the natural and supernatural. His mind had created a tunnel of a timeline that needed more guidance. It made sense to approach those faces that recognised him more than he did to them.
He was quite the famous man back then.
There was no hostility or hidden grudges he would hold onto – he knew what he did and accepted anything deserving of their disdain.
To his surprise, just as it had been every time, there was no use – or need – to continue being enemies. The distance between ranks and sections had given them all enough space to think of a way to move past whatever emotions ran in their souls memory.
Some still had more to work on.
But this new world of theirs gave them the time as well as the means to let out all their pent up frustrations on a good cause.
Purifying the hollow.
He knew the pinket would need her sweet time to sew her mind back together, the images and voices would morph and twist until they made sense. But you couldn't deal with it alone, she needed someone to talk to.
Someone to keep her on a straight line.
The only downside was, as it became apparent with all of them, once the memories become more real, you cannot stop it.
The timer began the moment she encountered the familiarity of her soul. It was too late to turn back, hence that blonde woman wanted her to stay away from her previous life and friends before she began to lash out. Even as the methods weren't to his liking and a little too harsh. No one could have predicted her actions after being put under the spotlight. Basically, shoving her into the fire to see if she will reach out or burn.
Surprisingly, she turned the tables.
The shock she caused was a great outlet for them to scatter, it was in their bests interests to keep their activities away from prying eyes. Surely it would be detrimental for their mission to let the higher ups know they were all in this strange cult trying to piece together what happened before they all woke up here.
It was eating them up.
One of the biggest rules was to leave your past behind and move on in order to become a soul reaper. There was no space for distractions that could jeopardise your safety or anyone else's. Your mind had to be synchronized with your sword and nothing else.
That is what pushed them even more to solve this mystery of theirs – the unfinished business that held them back from their true potential and peace of mind.
Her body was shifting from slumped shoulders to tensed muscles. It was no use to fight it. Her eyes focused and darkened as time ticked, they would grant her some space – but not take their eyes away from her.
You couldn't control the memories that flashed behind those eyes, it could be anything. From wonderful memories of happiness and better times to the worst nightmares you've ever lived. For all he knew, she might not remember anything other than hate or resentment from the previous encounters and try to attack them.
