General Monger's jet touched down in Modesto, and the monsters shuffled out onto the runway, greeted by the warm California sun. Ed Mercer, towering above them, looked out over his hometown with a mix of nostalgia and trepidation. The last time he had been here, he was a normal guy—just a guy about to get married. Now, he was a 50-foot giant, and his life had been turned upside down.
But one thing grounded him in the chaos: his friends and family. He could see them gathered at the edge of the runway, waving eagerly. Ed's heart swelled with joy as he recognized familiar faces—his parents, friends, and colleagues who had come to see him, despite his transformation.
"I can't believe they all showed up," Ed muttered, a smile tugging at his lips as he waved to them. "Guess being 50 feet tall doesn't scare them off."
Darulio, his fiancé, had stayed behind to sort out some matters, but Ed knew they'd reconnect soon. For now, this reunion meant everything.
As the monsters followed Ed into the crowd, the awkwardness began immediately. His family and friends, while enthusiastic, were clearly unnerved by Ed's monstrous companions. Dr. Cockroach was the first to break the ice—or attempt to.
"Ah, humans!" Dr. Cockroach exclaimed, extending one of his many hands toward Ed's parents with a wide, toothy grin. "I must say, it's a pleasure to finally meet the fine folks who raised our dear Ed. I've always had a fascination with your species."
Instead of shaking his hand, Ed's mom recoiled, eyes wide with terror. She whispered urgently to his father, "Is he... a bug?"
"I'm not just a bug, I'm a doctor, madam," Dr. Cockroach said proudly, clearly not reading the room.
Meanwhile, the Missing Link was trying to show off his strength by lifting one of the parked cars, causing gasps of horror. "What? I'm just showing 'em what I can do!" Link said, defensive as more people backed away, murmuring in fear.
B.O.B., full of enthusiasm, tried to interact with the younger guests. "Hey, guys! I'm B.O.B.!" he said, stretching his gelatinous body into amusing shapes. But the kids ran off screaming instead of laughing.
Insectosaurus, mostly quiet until now, let out a curious roar, which sent even more guests fleeing.
Ed watched in dismay as what should have been a happy reunion dissolved into chaos. "I knew this wasn't going to be easy," he muttered as his family and friends scrambled to leave the party.
Frustrated, Ed excused himself. He needed a moment to breathe, and he needed to find Gordon, his best friend from the news station. They hadn't spoken since Ed's transformation, and he missed their bond.
After a short walk through the city, Ed reached the familiar news station where Gordon worked. Everything looked so much smaller now, surreal in contrast to his new life.
"Gordon!" Ed called out, spotting his friend leaving the building.
Gordon turned, his eyes widening at the sight of Ed towering over him. "Ed... wow. You weren't kidding about being a giant."
"Yeah," Ed said, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's been a wild ride. But hey, I've been meaning to talk. I miss you, man. Once we figure out how to get me back to normal, I want things to go back to the way they were."
Gordon nodded, still trying to process the sight of his enormous friend. "Of course, Ed. I'll do whatever I can. You know I've always got your back."
After a heartfelt moment, Ed parted ways with Gordon and rejoined the monsters at an abandoned gas station. The reality of his situation started to settle in.
"Look," Ed began, addressing the group. "I know today didn't go as planned. But maybe things aren't supposed to go back to normal. Maybe this is our new normal. And... that doesn't have to be a bad thing."
The monsters looked at him, surprised at his change in perspective.
"I mean, sure, I'm 50 feet tall, and my life's upside down, but I feel better now. I've got you guys, and I've got a new outlook on life. Maybe being a 'monster' isn't the worst thing."
The group nodded in agreement, and Ed smiled, feeling a bond with his new friends.
Just then, Darulio arrived, his face lighting up when he saw Ed. "Ed!" he shouted, running up to him.
They embraced the best they could, given Ed's size. "I've missed you so much," Darulio said, his voice thick with emotion. "I don't care if you're giant—I'm just glad you're okay."
Ed smiled down at him, grateful for Darulio's support. "I missed you too."
But before they could share a proper moment, Gordon reappeared. The second Darulio saw him, his expression soured.
"And you!" Darulio shouted, pointing at Gordon. "How could you leave Ed at the wedding? You were his best friend!"
Gordon stammered, "I—I'm sorry! I didn't know what to do. Everything was happening so fast!"
"Enough!" Ed shouted, his frustration rising. But then he felt it—that terrifying sensation. His body was expanding again.
"Oh no," Ed gasped, panicked. He looked down as the world shrank around him once more, the ground seeming to pull away as he continued to grow. His heart pounded in his chest.
"Ed! Calm down!" Darulio shouted, running to his side.
"I'm trying!" Ed replied, breathing hard as he felt his muscles stretch and his bones expand. He shot up even higher, his head now level with the tops of trees and buildings. The others watched in awe and fear.
Ed forced himself to take deep breaths, trying to calm the pounding in his chest. Slowly, the growth began to stop, but not before Ed had grown several feet taller.
Exhausted and overwhelmed, he dropped to his knees, his giant frame shaking the ground. "I can't control it," he whispered, tears filling his eyes. "Every time I get upset or scared, I just... grow."
Darulio placed a comforting hand on his massive arm. "It's okay. We'll figure this out together."
Ed nodded, his breath still shaky, but he felt some comfort in Darulio's words. Despite everything—the chaos, his size, and the uncertainty—he wasn't facing this alone.
And that made all the difference....
until the sound of a spaceship caught their attention.....
